Appendix 1. Timeline of the Five Waves

This unfolds, on a single page, the map of the hundred years the main text has traveled across. Wherever a wave number comes up in the text, you can return to this list.

First wave (1820s–1840s). The medium: cheap print, the mail, and itinerant preaching on foot. This book's specimens: Mormonism, the Millerite adventist movement, and Spiritualism (the Burned-over District). Second wave (1870s–1900s). The medium: mass publishing and the railroad. This book's specimens: Christian Science, the Theosophical Society, and the Bible Student movement. Third wave (1910s–1930s). The medium: the automobile, the phonograph, and radio. This book's specimens: the Azusa Street Revival and the Pentecostal movement, the house car, the gospel car, and KFSG. Fourth wave (1960s–1980s). The medium: television. This book's specimens: televangelism (TV preaching) and the Western arrival of meditation movements. The 4.5th wave (mid-2010s–). The medium: recommendation algorithms and social media. This book's specimen: QAnon. Fifth wave (mid-2020s–). The medium: a medium that speaks for itself (AI). This book's specimens: personalized oracles, companion apps, and the Divine Platform.

Appendix 2. Glossary

These are terms this book has defined and used. The number beside each term is the chapter where it was first defined.

Foundations (chapters 1–5)

Cult (ch. 1): A neutral word from the Latin colere (to cultivate, to dwell, to worship). In this book, a community of devotion where people stay even though the door is open. Lens (ch. 1): A term from earlier waves for the frame through which the world is interpreted. Inherited in chapter 3 as the worldview prompt. Lens leasing (ch. 1): A business that rents space inside a worldview someone else has built, borrowing only its signal. The ladder of participation (ch. 1): The supplier's four rungs. Rung 0, unaffiliated; rung 1, tenant; rung 2, evangelist; rung 3, architect. The Fence (ch. 1): The 2×2 coordinate crossing the intensity of devotion with the cost of exit. The state of the door (ch. 1): The freedom to exit. The criterion that separates a cult community from a high-control group. Rendering (ch. 2): The process that converts a proposition into a set of perceptible values. The eight atmosphere layers (ch. 2): Air, light, color, material, body, viewpoint, sound, time. The input values of atmosphere. Methodological agnosticism (ch. 2): A stance that reads only the blueprint of the apparatus, without ruling on whether the belief itself is true. Universe-Framing (ch. 3): Building, atop individual values, an interpretive system that supplies justification for every value. Synchronization engine (ch. 3): The operating layer of a worldview that supplies justification for every value in the world. Worldview prompt (ch. 3): The set of perceptual filters and keywords that engage automatically when reading the world. This book's design term. Projection (ch. 3): The act of reading one's own reality layered over a work's vocabulary. DOM (ch. 4): Not a person who watches content but a person who lives in it — the -dom of fandom. Residency rate (ch. 4): The metric that replaces view counts. The share of people who come back, who speak by that world's own standards. The sterility theorem (ch. 4): The law that content without embedded atmosphere cannot build a community. Connoisseur utterance (ch. 4): The sentence "this isn't very us." Evidence that the baseline has been internalized. No-audience revisit (ch. 4): Footsteps that return even though no one is watching. The strongest evidence of dwelling. The inner parliament (ch. 5): The inside of a person is not a throne but a parliament of characters, and identity is the name of whichever character holds power. Taking office (ch. 5): The event in which a content character gains a seat in a person's parliament. Off-the-rack character (ch. 5): A character equipped within seconds, by purchase. Campaigning and governing (ch. 5): Conspicuous consumption and no-audience consumption. The stump speech and the business of governing. Private liturgy (ch. 5): A routine of use that customers invent and observe on their own, unprompted.

Tools (chapters 6–14)

Code (ch. 6): A proposition that, once believed, changes how the world looks. One sentence that makes up a worldview prompt. Salvation goods (ch. 6): The goods the Code promises. Seven items: healing, prosperity, knowledge, identity, imminent salvation, ecstasy, certainty. The True Reading (ch. 6): A strategy that inherits authority by laying an interpretive key atop the text of highest authority. Openness to falsification (ch. 6): The dial for whether a proposition can be corrected when it turns out wrong. The trade-off between lock-in and openness. New light (ch. 6): A device that formally embeds the right to revise doctrine within theology itself. Esoteric tiers (ch. 6): A design that discloses the Code in a staged sequence. The four narrative elements (ch. 7): Origin, adversary, the chosen, promise. Mytheme (ch. 7): Narrative structures and symbols with thousands of years of proven track record. An asset waiting to be acquired. Ritual (ch. 8): Muscle exercise for belief. A repeated procedure stored in the body. Collective effervescence (ch. 8): A sense of reality, exceeding the sum of individuals, produced by bodies performing the same motion on the same beat. The bonding formula (ch. 8): Frequency times intensity times synchronization. Liturgical calendar (ch. 8): The territorialization of time. A calendar that partitions everyday time with recurring dates. The three acts of testimony (ch. 8): Darkness before conversion, the encounter, new life after conversion. Hideout (ch. 9): A space of physical evidence that confirms the world is real. The three mechanisms of sacralization (ch. 9): Contact, scarcity, narrative. The coziness blend (ch. 9): Safety 0.85 and the presence of the outside 0.15. Overfitting (ch. 10): The mass automatic production of personally addressed revelation. The point where an engineering flaw becomes the condition for revelation. Hyperinference (ch. 10): The ability to stitch scattered fragments into a narrative of cause and purpose. The grammar of prophecy. Revelation wiring (ch. 10): The circuit through which revelation flows. Central monopoly, distributed, and, in the fifth wave, personalized. The fourth authority (ch. 10): A structure in which the right to revise the speaker belongs to a platform outside the worldview. Version (ch. 10): An attribute the fifth wave's speaker has. The first crack in the condition of self-identity. Divine Platform (ch. 10): A marketplace where individual oracles move in and compete on star ratings and reviews. Official (canon) (ch. 11): The text granted the highest interpretive authority. The measuring rod (canon) by which other texts are measured. Lore (ch. 11): The reserve of setting that has not yet been narrated. Fuel for the prompt. Headcanon (ch. 11): Setting that is canon only inside one's own head. Evidence of dwelling. Apocrypha (ch. 11): The sum of all headcanons. The domain of fan creation. Move-in funnel (ch. 12): The path of moving in, climbed in five stages, from a zero-cost first door to the reorganization of relationships. Rite of passage (ch. 12): A device that plants the cost of turning back at each landing. Its maximum intensity is a change of name. Settlement rate (ch. 12): Onboarding's core metric. Among those who join, the share who remain and write their own testimony. Fork (ch. 13): A schism. The metabolic action of a growing worldview. Marker (ch. 13): A general term for the marks that divide inside from outside. A device that re-inscribes belonging every day through everyday friction. The persecution converter (ch. 13): A device that recycles outside criticism into confirmation of belief. When it overheats, it seals shut. D-Day (ch. 14): A device that aligns everything in the world toward a specific future date. Failure protocol (ch. 14): A prepared device that folds prophetic failure back into the narrative. Four types: spiritual reinterpretation, invisible fulfillment, recalculation, trial narrative.

Synthesis (chapter 15)

Prompt core (ch. 15): The core of the world. Four boxes: Code, salvation goods, the Universe-Framing check, and time direction. Stack (ch. 15): The world's eight strata. Doctrine, narrative, ritual, experience, organization, material, media, ethics. Positioning dials (ch. 15): Six dials — tension, organization, authority, salvation goods, time, revelation. The five causes of failure modes (ch. 15): Tension excess, tension deficit, succession failure, over-specified prophecy, charisma single point of failure.
