This Summary C is what each chapter in the main text refers to as “Appendix D.” Whenever the main text directs you to “Appendix D,” come here.

Of the reference content for each chapter, only the few core examples directly tied to that chapter’s argument remain beside the main text; the rest are collected here by chapter. Each entry has been refined and ends with “What to examine,” so it can be read alongside the chapter’s point. The organizational note at the start of each chapter explains the categories and how to read them. When the same work appears in several chapters, it remains in each because the focus differs.

Chapter 1. Games Aren’t Cool

These examples extend Chapter 1’s argument beyond games: familiarity blinds users and creators alike, and the contest is decided by the first judgment, before the first input. They are grouped into five areas—video and board games; film and content; publishing, comics, and music; mobile apps and services; and offline life. Read each example beside the four mechanisms from the main text—the expert’s curse, invisible design, New Content relativity, and the curse of genre—and the conclusion of “designing the first judgment.” Ask which mechanism each case demonstrates.

Video and Board Games

  • Portal: Valve’s 2007 first-person puzzle game makes the opening sequence of test chambers the tutorial itself. Players internalize the rules through play rather than coercion, and even the guiding voice, GLaDOS, is integrated into the world. What to examine: when the teaching section is indistinguishable from the main game, each chamber shows how the user’s first judgment begins with “fun,” not “study.”
  • Dark Souls / Getting Over It: Dark Souls (2011) confronts the player with its first demon boss while poorly equipped, then lets them escape through a door on the left, obtain a proper weapon, and return. Getting Over It (2017) makes a fall that can erase all progress after a single mistake central to its identity. Both deliberately break the familiar expectation of a “friendly tutorial.” What to examine: alongside the main text’s scope condition—that unfriendliness becomes an admission ticket rather than a flaw when targeting core users—observe which users read this first experience as a challenge.
  • Mega Man (Rockman), Cut Man stage: In the first Mega Man (1987), the cursor on the stage-select screen defaults to this introductory area. Enemies in narrow passages and the placement of ladders let players practice movement, jumping, and shooting without coercion. What to examine: the invisible tutorial that teaches through enemies and terrain instead of instructions, and how one default on a selection screen predetermines the path of the first experience.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Great Plateau: The 2017 game turns its starting region into a miniature version of the full game. Players must gain four essential abilities from four shrines to receive the paraglider and leave, but the game tells them only where to go, not how to get there. What to examine: the devices that keep a closed starting zone from feeling like a compulsory training camp, and how freedom of route coexists with clarity of purpose.
  • Half-Life 2, Ravenholm: Shortly after players acquire the gravity gun, this area fills the stage with explosive barrels, saw blades, and zombies. Their hands learn to throw the environment as a weapon without explanation. What to examine: when a new mechanic is taught through stage arrangement rather than text, how every prop serves as a practice problem.
  • Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion / Pandemic’s introductory design: Jaws of the Lion, a companion game to Gloomhaven, turns its first five scenarios into lessons that open the rules gradually. Rather than making players finish the rulebook, it starts the first session immediately and teaches through play. Pandemic lowers the burden of the first session with an introductory setup that uses fewer cards to determine difficulty. What to examine: the same prescription works in board games—reduce explanation in the rulebook and reorder the experience to bring the first session forward.
  • Arcade attract mode (demo screen): While no coin is inserted, the machine repeatedly shows a play demonstration and high-score table to stop passersby. What to examine: an ancestor of the “playable ad,” placing a first judgment through display alone before interaction begins.
  • Steam Next Fest: Steam’s recurring event gathers demos of unreleased games and makes them free to play for several days. Developers can observe reactions to the first few minutes and wishlist trends before release. What to examine: when the first judgment moves ahead of the purchase, the demo’s opening screen effectively becomes the store page, and the demo’s first five minutes are graded before the main game.

Film and Content

  • Up, the “Married Life” opening: The 2009 film compresses Carl and Ellie’s life together into roughly four and a half minutes of music and montage without a line of dialogue, capturing the audience’s emotions in the opening alone. What to examine: a model of first-impression design that makes viewers feel without explanation, placing emotion before information.
  • WALL·E’s opening: The 2008 film proceeds for roughly its first twenty minutes almost without dialogue, like a silent film, conveying both the world of a devastated Earth and the protagonist’s character through movement, sound, and direction. What to examine: how far first-impression design can go by removing explanation and simply showing, and what fills the resulting space without boredom.
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones), cold open: The 1981 film imprints its protagonist through action alone—crossing temple traps, escaping a rolling boulder, and losing the artifact to his rival Belloq—without explaining who he is. What to examine: how action without explanation designs the first judgment, and how even failure becomes part of a character’s appeal.
  • Hollywood’s “first ten minutes rule” and cold-open convention: The industry belief that a film is lost if its opening does not capture the audience is so established that screenwriting manuals teach the placement of events in the first ten minutes separately. What to examine: an entire industry sharing a deadline for the first judgment. Only the length of the deadline differs from the design of a game’s first session; the structure is the same.
  • Television cold opens (Breaking Bad and others): A pre-title scene draws viewers in before they can change the channel. Breaking Bad (2008) expanded such openings into independent short stories, as with the crashed RV in the desert and Walter standing in his underwear. What to examine: when the opening scene favors the hook over information delivery, what it deliberately leaves unexplained.
  • Netflix autoplay and Skip Intro: Autoplaying the next episode and the Skip Intro button have solidified, through interface design, a viewing habit that treats waiting as taboo. What to examine: the process by which one service’s convenience feature becomes a new baseline every other piece of content must pass—New Content relativity taking shape.
  • Netflix title-thumbnail personalization: Netflix has described in its official technology blog a system that maintains several thumbnails for the same title and selects different images according to viewing history, because a single first-impression image can determine the decision to watch. What to examine: personalization of the first judgment, presenting a different first screen for the same content according to the viewer.
  • YouTube ads and the five-second skip: As ads skippable after five seconds became standard, advertising grammar itself reportedly reorganized around placing the brand and hook within the first five seconds. What to examine: the moment viewers gain the right to leave, the design of the first seconds changes the grammar of an entire genre.

Publishing, Comics, and Music

  • The opening-line “hook” in fiction—for example, Moby-Dick’s “Call me Ishmael”: The craft tradition of capturing readers in the first line is so long that famous opening sentences are discussed as a category of their own. What to examine: readers close a book for different reasons at each stage from cover to opening line and from opening line to first chapter. Follow that far and the example meets Chapter 3’s funnel reading.
  • Pop hooks and shortened intros: Designing the first seconds to catch the ear is an old craft, but intros are said to have grown shorter and choruses to have moved forward in the age of streaming and short-form video. What to examine: the causal chain by which a medium’s counting method—the standard for registering a stream—changes the design of the content’s opening.
  • Weekly Shonen Jump-style reader surveys: Readers submit their favorite series each week; rankings influence both placement within the magazine and whether serialization continues, and low-ranked works are often canceled. Former editors have said that discontinuation may be considered after as little as three weeks. What to examine: in a structure where the response to the first installment determines survival, what creators pour into Episode 1 reveals the full weight of a first impression.
  • Free first webtoon episode + vertical scrolling: Making the first episode free reduces entry cost to zero, while familiar vertical scrolling eliminates the need to learn how to read it. What to examine: the design borrows familiarity with price (“free”) and operation (“scroll”) at once, reducing friction in the first judgment from both sides.
  • Web novels, “Episode 1 abandonment,” and fast openings (regression, possession, reincarnation, cathartic payoff): Capturing readers in the opening of the first episode is treated as standard craft. Familiar premises such as returning to the past, inhabiting another body, or reincarnation let the story skip explanation and bring gratifying developments forward. What to examine: the compression of an opening by borrowing the reader’s prior experience—genre grammar—which leads directly to Chapter 5’s discussion of borrowing.

Mobile, Apps, and Services

  • TikTok’s “Continue as guest”: The app shows videos first and requests login only when interaction requires it, moving the cost of entry back and the first enjoyment forward. (For Duolingo’s delayed registration, see the Chapter 2 references.) What to examine: merely changing the order of entry steps can turn the first judgment from “a hassle” into “fun.”
  • Ad pretesting for hypercasual games: In the mobile hypercasual industry, developers are said to produce several ad videos before completing a game, measure the cost per install, and develop only concepts that receive a strong response into full products. What to examine: an extreme case in which the first judgment—one image in an ad—is graded before the product, showing that the design of the comparison set discussed in the main text has already hardened into an industry process.

Offline and Everyday Life

  • A play’s opening scene: The first image and first sound are carefully constructed to command the audience the moment the curtain rises. What to examine: even a medium with neither Skip nor Pause treats its first moment as decisive. A first impression determines the attitude of even an audience that cannot escape.
  • A new employee’s first day of onboarding: In human resources, the welcome on the first day and the readiness of equipment and workspace are widely understood to affect retention and engagement. What to examine: organizations design first experiences too, and small arrangements such as who shares lunch with the new employee shape the first judgment.
  • Apple unboxing (OOBE): It is often said in the industry that even the air gap is designed so the lid descends slowly under controlled pressure. What to examine: design that attends to the first impression of “the moment of opening” before the product itself, moving the start of the first experience ahead of the product screen.
  • “Plug and play” appliances: A design that works as soon as it is connected and removes the need to read a manual brings invisible design into everyday life. What to examine: recall an appliance you began using without instructions and verify the paradox that the better something works, the less anyone notices.
  • The IKEA effect: People value furniture they assemble themselves more highly than equivalent finished products; in one experiment, participants assigned a higher price to objects they had built. What to examine: a user’s first act of touching can lead to attachment, supporting the shift of a first screen from “showing” to “letting them touch.”
  • The 0.1-second first-impression experiment: In a 2006 study by psychologists Janine Willis and Alexander Todorov, people judged qualities such as trustworthiness and attractiveness after seeing an unfamiliar face for only 0.1 seconds, and longer exposure changed those judgments very little. What to examine: if the first judgment is closer to a reflex than deliberation, the first screen should be designed not as an argument but as an impression legible at a glance.
  • Perfume and cosmetics on a department store’s ground floor: Placing perfumes and cosmetics on the entrance floor is a long-standing industry convention. Their scent and brightness are said to define the impression of the entire store at the moment a shopper enters. What to examine: spaces have first screens too, and deciding what occupies the first point of contact is a design problem in every industry.

Chapter 2. FTUE Is Not a Tutorial

These examples show that the six terms separated in Chapter 2 appear in the same arrangement outside games: within the whole called UX, FTUE—the first encounter—and NUX—adoption—are distinct, while OOBE, tutorials, and onboarding are smaller stages and formats within them. The cases are grouped into video games; film and content; board games and play; mobile apps and services; and offline life. For each, pair it with the three units in the main text—device setup, first play, and one month later—and ask where “making it usable,” “recognizing what it is,” and “turning it into a habit” divide.

Video Games

  • Portal: The opening test chambers are both tutorial and part of the main game, so the control-learning segment and core-fun segment flow together without a boundary. What to examine: an extreme case that erases the distinction that a tutorial is merely one format within FTUE by uniting the format and the experience in one body.
  • Half-Life 2, Black Mesa East: Alyx has the player play catch with the robot Dog, passing a disabled Combine Rollermine back and forth. Through play, the hands learn the gravity gun’s pull and push without arrows. What to examine: implicit learning in which the tutorial is absorbed into play with a character rather than presented as separate instructions, revealing the division between explicit and implicit learning.
  • Animal Crossing: In early Animal Crossing games, shortly after moving into town, Tom Nook uses the player’s debt as a reason to put them to work in his shop. Free play opens only after errands such as changing clothes, planting saplings, and greeting neighbors are complete. What to examine: the compulsory tutorial that reveals the product’s identity and the adoption habit of returning daily to see the town are clearly different stages—the boundary between tutorial and NUX.
  • Overwatch Practice Range: A practice range and modes against AI are separated from main matchmaking, placing the stage for testing hero abilities apart from the first real match. What to examine: having a teaching format—the practice range—does not take responsibility for the first live experience. What happens in the first Quick Play match is the remaining half of FTUE.

Film and Content

  • Breaking Bad, Episode 1 cold open: Without explanation, the episode first throws out the image of Walter driving an RV through the desert in a gas mask and underwear while sirens approach. The series’ cold opens are often cited for emphasizing the hook over information delivery. What to examine: capturing the audience with a first impression and transmitting the world and its rules are separate designs—first impression and tutorial-like explanation are different work.
  • Star Wars: Episode IV opening: The 1977 film gives only minimal context in a few lines of opening crawl, then drops the audience into the middle of an ongoing galactic civil war and lets the unfolding story fill in the rest. What to examine: explaining all the background and creating immediate immersion are different tasks; the first immersion can work even when explanation is postponed.
  • A series pilot episode: Introducing the world, rules, and characters in Episode 1 and making viewers return every week are designed separately. What to examine: the design of the first encounter—the FTUE equivalent—and the design of adoption—the NUX equivalent—are handled with different techniques inside the same work.
  • A novel’s prologue and Chapter 1: The section that lays out the background is distinct from the section that draws readers into the story. What to examine: add the common belief that many readers skip prologues, and the cost of placing an explanatory section first becomes visible.

Board Games and Play

  • Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion / Pandemic introductory design: Studying the rulebook is only one format; designing a first session that remains enjoyable to the end is broader. What to examine: the distance between “the rules were taught” and “the first game was fun” has the same shape as the distance between tutorial completion rate and D1.
  • “Learning game” rule variants: In a first session, scores may deliberately be ignored or the rules reduced, separating the educational segment from the fun of the full game. What to examine: setting aside one teaching session is the same design choice as placing explicit learning outside the main game.
  • TRPG “Session Zero”: A customary meeting before the main adventure where participants align expectations, rules, and boundaries. What to examine: teaching the first input and agreeing on the entire first experience are different tasks; aligning expectations matters enough to become a separate stage.

Mobile, Apps, and Services

  • The iPhone’s first-power-on “Hello” screen: It begins with a single greeting shown in several languages and leads users into language, account, and permission settings without a dense wall of instructions. What to examine: the OOBE segment that makes the device usable sits separately before the main experience, and designing that entry to be short and frictionless is work of its own.
  • A new smartphone’s setup wizard: The OOBE segment for language, account, and permissions sits before the segment in which apps are enjoyed. What to examine: the length and blockages of this segment cause abandonment independently of the first fun, so OOBE should be evaluated by friction removal rather than fun.
  • Apps that defer permission requests until needed: Instead of bundling notification and location requests at first entry, these apps ask for each permission at the moment it becomes necessary. What to examine: an OOBE-splitting design that shortens the entry line and reduces the distance to the first fun; “when to ask” matters as much as “what to ask.”
  • Slackbot’s first guidance in Slack: New users are said to complete first steps such as profile setup through a conversation with Slackbot, performing the product’s core action—exchanging messages—inside the guidance itself. What to examine: when OOBE-like setup occurs within the product’s core grammar, teaching and first use overlap in a single action.
  • Netflix profile creation and preference selection: Immediately after joining, users are reportedly asked to create a profile and select several titles they like before the main activity of viewing, providing material for the first recommendation screen. What to examine: making the service usable and turning binge-watching into a habit are separate designs in services too.

Offline and Everyday Life

  • A pre-show announcement and the rising curtain: Operational guidance about seats and emergency exits—the OOBE equivalent—differs in character from the play’s first scene. What to examine: even within the same time and place, the tone and purpose of the two segments are completely different; the first experience begins only after the guidance ends.
  • Driving school theory and road practice: Learning rules and developing embodied driving skill are divided into different stages. What to examine: a perfect theory score does not guarantee competence on the road, just as tutorial completion does not guarantee the first fun.
  • Unboxing and installing an appliance—OOBE—and first use: Making something ready to use and using it well are separate. What to examine: recall the distance between the day the installer left and the day the appliance became part of daily life, and the difference between OOBE and adoption becomes tangible.
  • Receiving the car key and starting the engine for the first time—the delivery procedure: The delivery stage that makes the car operable is distinct from the stage in which driving becomes embodied. What to examine: no matter how helpful the delivery procedure, the tension of the first drive remains; the two stages cannot be solved at once.
  • IKEA assembly instructions: Stick figures, arrows, and symbols show the assembly sequence without words, asking for no language knowledge and allowing a first-time viewer to follow. What to examine: like Mario 1-1, this is a model of guidance that teaches through universal intuition, using arrangement and images rather than explicit prose to elicit the next action.
  • A gym orientation: Equipment instructions and an InBody measurement immediately after registration merely make the facility usable. Whether that member returns the following week remains a separate issue. What to examine: the chapter’s D1 argument repeats offline—tutorial completion, or finishing orientation, does not guarantee adoption, or regular attendance.

Chapter 3. What Does “First” Mean?

This collection checks the tool presented in Chapter 3—the funnel reading that divides “first” into eleven thresholds from T0, first word of mouth, through T10, first return, and identifies the stage where people leak—against cases from other media. It is grouped into video games and platforms, video and content, publishing/comics/music, mobile/apps/services, and offline/everyday life. For each case, pair the following questions with the chapter’s discussions of the funnel, time to value, and threshold rearrangement: Which threshold is operating here? What action constitutes the aha moment? What device rearranges the order of the thresholds?

Video Games / Platforms

  • Outer Wilds: in this 2019 game, “understanding” accumulates instead of stats, and the first reward arrives as an insight when scattered clues suddenly lock together. What to examine: an aha moment can be a cognitive event rather than a system reward such as a level or item, along with the cost that such a moment is difficult to bring forward.
  • Minecraft’s first night: while making the first pickaxe and building the first shelter before sunset, the user reaches the realization, “So this is what kind of game it is.” What to examine: the time pressure of day and night creates the first session’s objective on its own, allowing the system to manage time to value.
  • Stardew Valley’s first harvest: planting seeds, waiting several in-game days, and finally harvesting the first crop remains a clear first achievement. What to examine: a case where the aha moment is designed to arrive several days later rather than within the first session, and the small rewards that sustain the user in between.
  • It Takes Two: this 2021 two-player-only cooperative game reveals its “core value” only when the pair solves their first cooperative puzzle together. What to examine: a game whose aha moment requires another person adds the threshold of recruiting a partner to first entry (T3).
  • Steam’s two-hour refund policy: Steam officially offers refunds regardless of reason when playtime is under two hours and the purchase was made within fourteen days, turning the first two hours after purchase into a de facto evaluation period. What to examine: if the first session is also a refund review, time to value becomes a variable directly tied to revenue.

Video / Content

  • The Save the Cat! method: the screenwriting guide Save the Cat! specifies the structure of the first ten minutes by page count, establishing tone with an opening image on page one and introducing the catalyst around page twelve. What to examine: an approach to craft that manages the opening phase through coordinates—what happens on which page—rather than intuition, much like the eleven thresholds.
  • Episode-one drop-off curves in streaming: a funnel in which viewers leave from episode to episode, where the key question is which episode loses the most people. What to examine: saying “At which episode does it break?” rather than “Viewership is low” reveals what to repair, using the same language as threshold-level diagnosis.
  • Cold opens (Breaking Bad, Lost): a teaser that drops viewers into the middle of an event before the opening credits, binding them to the story before they change channels. What to examine: a rearrangement that postpones the explanatory section wholesale to accelerate first recognition (T4).
  • Review embargoes: the film and game industries contractually control when reviews may be published, managing the time when first word of mouth (T0) is released. It is also widely observed that an embargo lasting until just before release can itself be read as a bad sign. What to examine: the pre-game phase (T0–T2) is a managed design target rather than luck, along with the backfire in which control becomes a negative signal.

Publishing / Comics / Music

  • The hook of a novel’s first sentence and Chapter 1 drop-off: the point where a reader closes a book may be the cover, the first line, or the first chapter, and each stage has a different cause. What to examine: drop-off always occurs stage by stage regardless of medium, so prescriptions must also differ by stage.
  • Weekly Shōnen Jump reader surveys and early cancellation: readers vote each week for the works they liked, and serials rise or fall on those rankings; reportedly, in some cases editors may assess cancellation as early as three weeks after a series debuts. What to examine: how a market in which opening-phase results immediately decide survival solidifies a structure that concentrates resources in the first installment.
  • The web-novel first-episode “golden time” and cathartic opening: because readers may leave immediately if Episode 1 ends in frustration, standard practice is to preserve continued-reading rates by including satisfying developments and a small complete arc within the opening episodes. What to examine: the publishing version of shortening time to value by pulling first reward (T8) into Episode 1.
  • Streaming’s thirty-second rule and shortened intros: once a play had to pass thirty seconds to count toward streams and royalties, intros reportedly shrank from around twenty seconds in the 1980s to roughly five, while more songs moved the chorus forward. What to examine: a measurement standard that changed the form of content, demonstrating that what we measure determines what we make.

Mobile / Apps / Services

  • Playable ads: an advertising format that lets users directly control a miniature stage before installation, pulling first action (T5) and a taste of first reward (T8) ahead of installation (T3). What to examine: the chapter’s final argument—that thresholds are not a fixed ladder but design variables that can be rearranged—in its clearest form.

Offline / Everyday Life

  • Sales pipeline stages: conversions are tracked stage by stage from lead to contract to identify where the largest drop occurs. What to examine: funnel thinking was a basic practice of sales management even before digital products, and only by dividing the stages can responsibility and prescriptions be separated.
  • Test-driving a car: a procedure that puts the first action—the steering wheel—before the major decision to purchase. Dealerships standardize even the test-drive route and accompanying guidance to manage the first few minutes of impression. What to examine: in high-priced products, the same threshold rearrangement used in supermarket sampling becomes a process complete with route design.
  • Apartment model homes: the convention of building a full-scale sample unit of a home that does not yet exist, bringing the first impression and expectation (T1–T2) of an unrealized product forward into a physical experience. What to examine: the device that creates expectation (T2) also becomes a promise, and a mismatch with the actual move-in experience can return as a dispute.
  • The IKEA effect: experiments have reported that people assign greater attachment and value to objects they assembled themselves. What to examine: the achievement of first reward (T8) grows when users complete the first result with their own hands, so automatic progress that completes it for them can instead diminish the reward.

Chapter 4. What Is Experience?

This collection examines Chapter 4’s two tools across several media: the signifier-signified checkpoint separating signs (experience imitations) from events (experiences), and the layered reading in which experience accumulates across the world, system, sensory, social, and business layers that collide with one another. It is grouped into video games; video, music, and stage; mobile, apps, and services; and offline and everyday life. For each case, pair the chapter’s checkpoint questions with these: What is the sign here, and is there an event behind it? If there is a collision, which layers are colliding?

Video Games

  • Visual overload in Diablo IV boss fights: players have repeatedly pointed out situations where particles from their own and allied skills cover the screen, hiding the warning signs for boss attacks that actually need to be avoided. What to examine: a collision in which the sensory layer covers and breaks the system layer—the moment spectacle devours information.
  • Half-Life’s opening without cutscenes: the story is told through the structure of corridors and scripted direction while the player almost never loses first-person control. What to examine: a case that avoids the collision itself by dissolving system-layer guidance into the world layer, and the conditions under which guidance does not break immersion.
  • Bot matching in mobile competitive games: some mobile competitive games are said to fill early matches with bots disguised as people to grant winning streaks. The sign says “competition,” but the event of facing a real opponent is absent. What to examine: the deeper betrayal of forging the event rather than merely copying the sign, because the moment the deception is exposed, all prior victories collapse retroactively.
  • Anonymous cooperation in Journey: the 2012 game Journey lets strangers travel together silently without usernames, chat, or scores. Even after removing almost every social sign, the event of walking together leaves a powerful emotion. What to examine: the exact opposite proof of the empty heart—experience exists when the event exists, even without a signifier.

Video / Music / Stage

  • Inside Out: the 2015 film depicts Joy and Sadness as characters, while tying the control-console buttons in the mind to actual changes in Riley’s behavior and emotions according to who presses them. What to examine: a model of personification in which the sign of abstract emotion is clearly paired with the event—Riley’s change—and signifier and signified engage one another.
  • Fake newspapers and news screens in films: props that look like real information but point to no event, leaving a sign without substance. What to examine: a passing prop can survive on the sign alone, along with the limit exposed when the audience pauses to inspect it.
  • The radio transition in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: music playing like a background score is revealed as sound inside the world the moment a character switches off the car radio. What to examine: the same music belongs to a different layer depending on whether it is sound inside the world or direction outside it, and direction can move across layer boundaries.

  • Scream: Wes Craven’s 1996 horror film assumes the audience’s genre knowledge so thoroughly that its characters recite horror-movie rules aloud, then twists those expectations from the opening scene to create shock. What to examine: borrowed conventions remain assets even when twisted, along with the limit that the twist does not work for an audience unfamiliar with them.

  • Build-A-Bear Workshop: customers stuff a toy themselves, dress it, and even make a birth certificate, drawing out greater affection for something made with their own hands. What to examine: symbols standardized across media and devices are the cheapest borrowing assets, so using one for another meaning is the most expensive mistake.

What to examine: the balance that lets people choose which layer to remain in while ensuring either choice produces a complete experience.
  • The musical Hamilton: almost entirely sung, it lets a first-time listener follow the plot, while historical and literary references embedded in rapid rap lyrics become legible only to core fans after repeated listening. What to examine: placing a second reading for the core-fan layer inside the same lyrics without blocking comprehension for the light-audience layer.
  • Norton Juster’s The Phantom Tollbooth: in this 1961 children’s novel, children read an adventure about a bored boy while adults read a layer of wordplay that literalizes idioms. A phrase such as “jumping to conclusions” becomes an actual island reached by jumping. What to examine: publishing’s double address, burying several reading layers within one text without blocking progress for readers at the lower layer.

Mobile / Apps / Services

  • The 90–9–1 participation inequality: a rule of thumb for online communities in which most people only watch, some occasionally contribute, and a tiny number create directly, widely associated with usability researcher Jakob Nielsen’s 90–9–1 ratio. The exact ratio varies by community, but the slope is consistently observed. What to examine: the watching majority is a premise rather than a defect, giving grounds to design separately for people who only observe.
  • Parental-consent gates in children’s apps: screens that excite children and consent or payment screens that reassure parents appear as different layers within one flow. The parental-verification step may deliberately be made difficult for children to solve, using multiplication or a long press on text. What to examine: a design that clearly changes the layer addressed by each screen, alongside a reverse design that deliberately blocks one layer—the child—from passing.
  • Netflix Kids profiles: within the same account, a child profile uses a brighter, simpler interface and larger thumbnails while restricting access to settings; adult profiles remain unchanged. The profile-selection screen effectively asks, “Which layer are you entering as?” What to examine: how the simplest device for delegating layer separation to the user—the profile—became a standard way for one service to provide different interfaces to different layers.
  • Wikipedia readers and editors: the Edit button is always visible on every article, yet most people read for life. The moment a person corrects one typo, the same person moves from reader to editor. Many articles can be edited without signing in to lower the threshold of the first edit. What to examine: exposing an entrance to the operator layer—Edit—at all times on the viewer layer’s screen—the article—while keeping it subdued enough not to interfere with reading.
  • Switching between guest and host on Airbnb: with one account, a person becomes a guest renting accommodation while traveling, then switches to host mode when listing their own home and becomes an operator managing bookings and settlements.   • Presenter, attendee, and staff routes at a conference: in the same venue, presenters move to backstage waiting rooms, attendees to session rooms, and staff across the spaces between them. The same person may be a presenter in the morning and return as an attendee in the afternoon. What to examine: spatial design becoming layer design, with a single badge color labeling layers and dividing permissions offline.
  • Karaoke: in one room, the same person becomes the star when holding the microphone, an audience member cheering while someone else sings, and an operator arranging the order while holding the song controller. The layers rotate every few minutes without confusion because the microphone, sofa, and controller serve as signs of the layer. What to examine: a layer-transition method that signals role change through the object held in the hand rather than through a screen.
  • Parent-observation classes: the same lesson in the same classroom becomes a more tense-than-usual class for children and a chance for parents standing at the back to check whether their children are doing well. The teacher addresses the child and guardian layers simultaneously through one class. What to examine: what changes when another layer—the guardian—enters a screen that normally addresses only one—the student—and where the demands collide, such as advancing the lesson versus putting on a demonstration.

Chapter 7. Extreme Beginners and False Beginners: Eight Types of Experiencers

This collection extends Chapter 7’s argument into media beyond games: there is no single kind of beginner. Beneath the broad divide between gamers and ordinary people, beginners split by what they do not know into eight branches—genre, title, platform, worldbuilding, economy, social, returning, and spectator—and false beginners carrying the wrong luggage are more difficult than extreme beginners arriving empty-handed. The cases are grouped into five branches: video games; board games; video, publishing, and content; mobile, apps, and services; and offline life. As you read each case, identify which of the eight beginners this person is and whether they arrived empty-handed or carrying the wrong luggage.

Video Games

  • Dead Cells / Hades: Both roguelikes assume repeated death.   • The post-credits scene in The Avengers (2012): After the film, a short scene says that to fight the Avengers is “to court death,” and Thanos turns and smiles. A comics reader knows that Thanos has long adored the entity Death and reads the implication of the smile; a new viewer sees only the appearance of a new villain. Examine how the thickness of the signal taken from the same scene differs by origin, while the treatment still supports the scene as complete for the person who does not know.
  • The Harry Potter film adaptations: Book readers expect the realization of scenes they imagined, while viewers meeting the story first through film expect a new story. Two different expectations sit side by side in the same theater. Examine how the priority between reproducing the source and guiding newcomers reveals which origin was chosen as the primary immigration candidate.
  • Dune (2021): Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation handles in one opening both the proper nouns brought by novel readers and the blank slate of new viewers.   • Fortnite: Beside its primary battle-royale world, it has attached Creative modes for making and playing, events centered on performance and socializing, and adjacent worlds such as LEGO Fortnite (2023). The same avatar and locker follow people into every world. Examine the distance arrangement where adjacent worlds remain close enough to the primary yet offer one new flavor, and how the shared household of an avatar reduces the burden of moving.

  • A first impression filled with examples instead of an empty screen: Collaboration tools and note apps fill first entry with sample documents and projects rather than emptiness, conveying through atmosphere “this is what people do here” instead of making someone memorize settings. Examine whether examples furnished like a model home before move-in guide the first action, and whether they are easy to remove once no longer needed.
  • Instagram Reels: This vertical short-video section added in 2020 is often described as designed so that the hand habit of people who lived on TikTok—vertical swiping—works unchanged. It becomes a neighboring district within the same app for existing Instagram residents and a near migration for people from TikTok. Examine how importing another neighborhood’s hand habit shortens immigration distance, along with the cost to existing residents who feel that their neighborhood changed.

Film and Animation

  • The opening of Spirited Away: The 2001 film follows Chihiro through a tunnel and an empty restaurant street without explanatory dialogue, until night falls and gods appear. The audience receives the other world through mood at the same pace as Chihiro. Examine an opening that makes the world felt first through scenery and light without proper nouns, and the structure in which the protagonist’s confusion carries the audience’s confusion.

  • Episode 1 of Made in Abyss: It begins with daily life in Orth, the town at the edge of the enormous pit, and immediately lets the audience experience cave-raiding culture through action, living the world’s mood and rules without explanation. Examine how the first episode gives the impression of the neighborhood entrance before a setting lecture, and how the world’s central rules arrive naturally inside a character’s daily work.
  • Mad Max: Fury Road: The 2015 film drops the audience directly into a chase after a few short lines of monologue. Art direction and character behavior, not explanatory dialogue, reveal the rules of a wasteland ruled by those who control water and oil. No knowledge of the previous three films is required. Board Games and TRPGs

  • Gloomhaven’s first scenario: Although it is a large campaign board game released in 2017, it does not make players read the entire setting book. It lets them live in the world through one small first adventure. Examine the method of reducing rules and world to one session’s portion, and the restraint of carving a smaller first entrance for a larger world.
  • A TRPG session zero: Before the main game, participants meet to align tone and mood, what they want, and what they wish to avoid. Before making anyone memorize the rulebook, they first see whether this is a place where people can live. Examine how agreeing on the neighborhood’s mood before moving in reduces abandonment, and whether our onboarding has a stage corresponding to session zero.

Offline and Everyday Life

  • Disneyland’s “weenie,” the attention-drawing landmark: A term associated with Walt Disney, it refers to a distant landmark such as a castle that catches the eye and draws people inward. The scenery points the route without instructions. Examine design where landscape rather than names and maps creates movement, and what serves as the weenie on our first screen.
  • Mood design in a museum’s first gallery: Instead of pouring out wall text, museums use the first room’s light and sound to convey what kind of place it is, reducing viewing fatigue. Examine the first-room arrangement that gives atmosphere before information, and whether our first screen is a room of wall text or a room of light.
  • An IKEA showroom: Furniture is shown not through specification sheets and shelf display, but by furnishing entire living rooms and bedrooms. A person entering can bodily estimate, “This is what living here would be like.” Examine how displaying a way of life rather than specifications draws the imagination of moving in, and whether our first screen shows specs or a household.
  • Inspecting a new neighborhood before deciding to move: People do not register as residents first. They look at the streets and people’s expressions to judge whether it is worth living there. Examine how the first screen is the object of that inspection and what appears within the first few seconds at our neighborhood entrance.

Each role carries a different play sensation. The weight of aspiration and display, the thrill of speed and mastery, and the reward of protection and care call different people on the same screen. Examine whether characters on our roster divide the sensations among themselves or all wear different clothes over one sensation.
  • Agent selection in Valorant: In Riot’s 2020 tactical shooter, agents divide into role groups such as Duelists and Sentinels. Someone who enjoys direct fights is drawn to Duelists; someone who enjoys laying traps, guarding the rear, and frustrating opponents is drawn to Sentinels. They choose a character through the grain of play, not tier. Examine how role-group names indicate behavioral grain rather than performance figures, and whether the first choice screen asks not “What is strongest?” but “How do I want to play?”
  • Villagers in Animal Crossing: Hundreds of villagers with no combat stats at all divide only by eight personality types and speech patterns—lazy, peppy, snooty, and others—so every person finds different villagers to care for. The villager people keep talking to remains more memorable than a strong one. Examine how a favorite arises through connection and conversation alone even on a roster without an ability field, and how the number of personality types is the number of kinds of people the game can call.
  • Villagers in Stardew Valley: In this 2016 farming game, relationships deepen through gifts and heart events independently of combat and farming ability. Each person chooses different villagers to befriend and marry. They are objects of relationship, not efficiency units. Examine how, when relationship content is separated from efficiency, people treat characters as partners rather than parts.
  • Team Fortress 2 class silhouettes: The nine classes of this 2007 game were shaped with distinct bodies and poses so they can be distinguished by black silhouettes alone. Heavy’s large body looks impossible to knock over, while Scout’s thin legs look fast but weak, foreshadowing personality and play sensation. Valve is known to have made silhouette recognition a principle of its art direction. Examine whether appearance alone, without explanatory copy, reveals which sensation a character calls—speed and mastery or safety and comfort.
  • Off the Hook (Pearl and Marina) in Splatoon: The host duo of Splatoon 2 (2017) pairs loud, direct Pearl with calm, technical Marina. Their opposite grains divide which one draws each fan. Eyes stop at different places on the same screen. Examine how placing the two side by side without ranking turns the split into preference rather than conflict.

Animated Film

  • The emotion characters in Inside Out: In the 2015 film, Joy is yellow and star-shaped, Sadness blue and teardrop-shaped, and Fear thin like a single exposed nerve. The creators are known to have shaped color and form so each emotion reads immediately. Appearance is the heart each character touches. Examine whether our characters’ shape and color convey the intended sensation at a glance and whether personality remains when form is hidden.
  • Carl and Russell in Up: The 2009 film shapes stubborn old Carl as a square and innocent boy Russell as a circle, letting the contrast of two forms make both readable without an ability explanation. Examine how shape language is the cheapest means of translating personality.

  • Winnie-the-Pooh’s friends: Laid-back Pooh, timid Piglet, bouncy Tigger, and gloomy Eeyore beckon different readers through different temperaments in the same forest.   • Favorite-character splits in ensemble casts: Even while watching the same drama, viewers’ hearts remain with different characters. It is common for a supporting character, rather than the protagonist promoted by producers, to create a phenomenon. Examine how popularity follows character grain rather than screen time or setting, and how the person before whom viewers stop becomes the measured value of the sensory roster.
  • Sesame Street: This children’s program, begun in 1969, divides sensations among puppets on one stage. Elmo carries connection and conversation through eye contact with young viewers. Cookie Monster carries play and reaction that erupts when touched. Big Bird’s large, clumsy nature inspires protection and care.   • Favorite-member splits in idol groups: Even watching the same stage, different people are drawn to vocals, dance, kindness, or stage command, dividing their preferred members. Popularity of the group as a whole and each member’s fandom run separately. Examine how different charms, not a ranking table, call different people, and how the prototype of the character roster already exists onstage.

Manga and Comic Books

  • Character popularity polls in boys’ manga: In reader polls for weekly serialized manga, the strongest character does not necessarily come first. The character that touched people does, and protagonists are not rarely surpassed by supporting characters. Examine this rare device that numerically demonstrates performance and popularity as separate axes, and whether our game can measure them separately.

Webtoons

  • Webtoons driven by characterization: The first episode lets readers meet a person to love through expression, atmosphere, and speech habits rather than stats or world explanation. Examine which sensation appears first in the opening episode and whether attraction precedes information.

Theme Parks and Spatial Experiences

  • Character greetings in Disney parks: Visitors choose favorite characters to meet around the park. Lines form before popular characters, but these lines are made by each person’s heart, not a tier chart. Examine how the meeting is designed before transaction and how the first point of contact is “going to find” rather than “drawing.”

Character IP and Merchandise

  • Sanrio’s My Melody and Kuromi: My Melody’s gentle loveliness and Kuromi’s mischievous edge call different fans through opposite grains. Both are known to compete near the top of annual character rankings. Examine IP operation that makes divergent popularity read as a difference in grain rather than superiority.

It was disabled by default in early-2000s releases and eventually disappeared. Examine this counterexample: merely placing a character does not make it an interpreter. If the character’s sensation and actual behavior diverge, the interpreter becomes noise.

Chapter 11. The User's State: Distraction and the Price of Experience

This collection extends the chapter's claim that experience is not given but paid for: the first screen charges users seven costs—attention, time, opportunity, social burden, failure, personal information, and the psychology of monetization—and those prices rise and fall with the user's state rather than following a fixed list price. By reducing input to one action for a distracted, one-handed user holding a subway strap, they let “just one more round” roll through every short gap. Observation: whether our first action remains possible with one hand amid noise; the number of inputs is the number of lines on the attention bill.
  • Slot machines' “near misses” and winning presentations: gambling research discusses how a near miss that stops just short of a win and a presentation that sounds like victory despite returning less than the stake encourage continued play. This is the source form of the excitement borrowed by gacha. Observation: the same presentation reads as excitement to someone from a gaming background but as a warning—“this place runs on chance and money”—to a newcomer; the price of excitement differs by origin.
  • Super Mario Bros. 1-1: the 1985 game places a Goomba in the player's path immediately after the start without a line of text, letting the player learn to jump on their own before reaching a complex section. The level structure pays the attention cost that explanatory text would have charged. Observation: embedding instruction in the screen's structure reduces the cost almost to zero; watch how the arrangement teaches only one action at a time.

Live-Action Film

  • The line of commercials and trailers before a movie: a time cost charged first to people who came for the feature, and the longer it is, the more expensive it feels to viewers who have already paid for a ticket. Observation: an added charge feels more expensive to someone who has already paid another cost; measure how many minutes of “line before the feature” our first screen contains.
  • The cold opens of Breaking Bad and Lost: Breaking Bad (2008) begins its first episode with a man in his underwear driving an RV carrying bodies through the desert. Lost (2004) begins with its protagonist awakening in a jungle without explaining the crash. They raise a question before explaining who and why, avoiding time and attention charges before giving. Observation: how delaying explanation and putting an event first turns costs into postpayment.

Live-Action TV / Drama

  • Netflix's “Skip Intro” and automatic next episode: they treat waiting and repeated clicks as costs and remove them from the viewer's hands. The Skip Intro button was reportedly introduced around 2017, and the next episode begins automatically after the credits. Observation: design that reduces friction on the assumption that viewers will look away; also note the accompanying criticism that automatic continuation holds viewers for too long.
  • Ad-supported free viewing: content looks free, but the viewer pays a time cost in advertising. The less visible the cost is, the more readily people step inside. Observation: visible and felt costs are different; identify which costs on our first screen are visible and which are hidden.
  • YouTube's “Skip after 5 seconds” ads: instead of forcing the full time cost of an ad, they charge a fixed five-second rate and leave the rest to the viewer's choice. Skipped ads are reportedly tied to a system in which the advertiser is not charged. Observation: when a cost cannot be avoided, announcing its upper bound in advance lowers its perceived price; compare waiting whose end is known with waiting whose end is unknown.

Music

  • Shortened song intros in the streaming era: because distracted listeners skip a song within seconds, musicians first cut the time cost of the introduction. Reportedly, intros that averaged around twenty seconds in the 1980s have recently shortened to around five, and roughly a quarter of streaming songs are skipped in the first five seconds. Observation: cut the introduction so listeners do not leave before hearing the value; the first five seconds are the most expensive checkout counter.

Board Games

  • Heavy board games such as Gloomhaven: the thick rulebook of this 2017 title can charge attention and time costs all at once before the first play. The rulebook therefore uses the first scenario, Black Barrow, as an example, teaches only the rules needed for that session, and recommends that one person lead the game. Observation: teach only what the first play needs instead of everything in advance; this is a concrete technique for converting a lump-sum cost into installments.
  • Beginner-friendly progression that adds one task per turn: it slices requirements thin so even a distracted first-time player decides only one thing at once. Observation: the principle of “ask for only one thing at a time” takes the same form on the table.

Real-World Workflows

  • Sites that block browsing until sign-up: they charge a personal-information cost to someone who might merely come to like the service. Charge before giving, and people calculate first. Observation: can we read drop-off before the sign-up barrier as “excessive cost” rather than “lack of interest”?
  • Immediate assistance at a store entrance versus letting people browse first: when an employee follows someone as soon as they enter, a person who only wanted to look around feels burdened and leaves. Social costs are priced in everyday spaces too. Observation: whether the greetings, notifications, and conversation on our first screen are hospitality or burden; the user's state makes that judgment.

General Apps

  • Apps whose product bundles and discount timers cover the screen from day one: they impose a psychological monetization cost by making users decide “Will this place cost money?” before enjoying anything. Observation: the moment a payment offer precedes the experience of value, the calculation of trust begins.
  • The anecdote of the “$300 million button” in guest checkout: as told by UX expert Jared Spool, a large online retailer required sign-up just before checkout, then added a “Continue without registering” button and saw completed purchases rise enough to add roughly $300 million in annual revenue. Observation: the personal-information cost is most expensive just before payment; moving the timing of the same charge changes its price.
  • Amazon's one-click ordering: it collects and stores the recurring costs of entering an address and payment method once, then completes future orders with one press. The feature was patented in 1999, and the patent reportedly expired in 2017. Observation: where on our screen could a design collect a repeated time and attention cost only once?

Devices / Consumer-Electronics UX

  • Long initial-setup wizards for smart TVs and devices: they line up language, region, remote pairing, Wi-Fi, terms, account login, and updates, charging time and attention before the device can be used. If even one step fails, returning to the beginning makes the process more frustrating. Products that at least provide “Skip” or “Later” for account login and similar steps reduce the entry cost. Observation: distinguish costs that cannot be deferred, such as essential setup, from those that can, such as account and app login; package the bill into one sheet.

Theme Parks / Spatial Experiences

  • Posted wait times at Disney parks: attractions display estimated waits at their entrances and fill the queue with things to see and advance presentation. It is often said that the posted time is set slightly longer than the actual one to leave the feeling that “we got on sooner than expected.” Observation: if a time cost cannot be removed, disclose it in advance and place content inside the wait to lower its perceived price; this principle can be copied onto a loading screen.

Offline / Everyday Life

  • Costco sample stations: they let customers taste before buying. This is a prototype of postpayment that puts value in the customer's hand before collecting a charge, and samples are often said to raise sales of the product substantially. Observation: whether our first screen presents the checkout before the sample; what is the “one bite” we will give first?

Literature

  • The in medias res openings of the Odyssey and Iliad: rather than explaining everything ab ovo, from the egg, they pull the reader directly into the central situation. The Iliad begins not at the start of the Trojan War but with the quarrel between Achilles and Agamemnon, filling in the missing background later through recollection. Observation: the ancient prototype of an opening that delays background explanation and begins with action; epics were already collecting costs through postpayment thousands of years ago.

Comics

  • The battle for the first chapter in Weekly Shonen Jump: reader surveys rank a series from immediately after its debut, and a failure to hold readers within the first few chapters is known to lead to early cancellation. Editors and creators therefore place their greatest effort into the first chapter. Observation: the first chapter is where a newcomer assigns the most expensive first-impression cost; watch what it shows and what it defers.

Chapter 12. Types of Experience by Content

This collection brings together cases from many media to test two claims: a feature list and an experience list are not the same, and people's experiences through content divide into ten types—sensation, understanding, choice, achievement, ownership, relationship, world, ritual, display, and discovery—so people open the same content in pursuit of different experiences. The cases are grouped by medium, and each entry ends with an “Observation” describing what a designer should watch. There is one way to read them: count how many of the ten cells each piece of content fills, and which cells people enter through.

Video Games

  • Minecraft: in the same world, one person becomes absorbed in building, another in survival and exploration, and another in researching redstone circuits. Separate Creative and Survival modes formally recognize that split. Observation: choosing a mode is the question “Which experience did you come to undergo?”; examine what must be separated for one world to hold several experiences.
  • Stardew Valley: in this 2016 game, Grandpa's Evaluation in year three awards points in different cells, including total earnings, museum collection, skills, friendships with villagers, and restoration of the Community Center. Whether a player pursues only farming, collecting, or relationships, they can reach the same recognition. Observation: the evaluation system itself is a rare case of counting several experience types equally; examine which types our own evaluation table counts exclusively.
  • The Sims: home decoration (ownership), human relationships (relationship), and creating a life story (world and choice) divide a sandbox without a victory condition into as many experiences as there are people. Observation: when there is no victory condition, what each person came to do becomes most clearly visible.
  • Death Stranding: this 2019 game centers delivery and foregrounds asynchronous cooperation, in which roads, bridges, and zip-lines placed by one person are shared by others. It drives the game through connection (relationship), not combat (achievement). Observation: a game still works when the genre's default experience is removed and another type is cast as the lead.
  • EVE Online: in the space MMO running since 2003, mining, manufacturing and trade, exploration, piracy, and combat all function as professions. Combat is not the only means of contribution; the whole economy divides into different experiences for different people. Observation: when every experience type has its own profession, one world can admit several kinds of people at once.
  • Final Fantasy XIV: the same game has separate noncombat jobs, Disciples of the Hand (crafting) and Disciples of the Land (gathering). There is room for people who stay through crafting, gathering, housing, and glamour without fighting. Observation: examine a design that formalizes the place of noncombat players at the job-system level.
  • Pokémon GO: in this location-based game released in 2016, one person opens the app to complete the Pokédex and collect differently colored variants (ownership), another for raids and battles (achievement), and another for walking and gatherings (relationship and ritual). Observation: whether the overlapping experiences in one app are separated enough not to interfere with one another, and whether the first screen blocks entry through any experience.
  • Gran Turismo: racing (achievement) appears to be central, but beginning with GT Sport (2017), Scapes photo mode, livery, and tuning gave a separate group ways to customize cars (sensation and ownership), photograph them, and show them (display). Observation: even within the racing genre, experiences outside competition form a substantial layer.

Animated Film

  • Toy Story: the story centers relationship as different characters assign different meanings to the same toys. Its audience also divides between children who see adventure and adults who see friendship and loss. Observation: how to layer one screen so it arrives as a different experience depending on the viewer.
  • Spirited Away: children see the 2001 film as an adventure through the world of spirits (discovery and world), while adults read it as an allegory of labor, money, and growth (understanding). Observation: layering the same scene so it gives two audience groups different experience types at once.
  • Pixar's Inside Out / Up: children enjoy colorful adventures and characters (sensation and discovery), while adults receive the acceptance of sadness and the emotions of loss (world and understanding). Observation: a composition that keeps the two layers of experience from obscuring each other.

Literature

  • The Little Prince: children read the same text as an adventure across planets (discovery), while adults read the relationship and loss of taming and farewell. One book arrives as different experiences for different readers. Observation: the thickness of a text that gives each layer a different experience without excluding any readership.

Live-Action TV / Drama

  • Diverging motives for watching the same IP: one person watches for narrative, another for character relationships, and another for the accuracy of the world-building. Observation: viewing reactions and fan activities—clip edits, setting guides, character analysis—are free data showing the distribution of experience types.

Music

  • Different listening through the same playlist: on Spotify, one person lets the same set of songs play for concentration or background (sensation and ritual), another digs into it to discover new artists (discovery), and another shares a collaborative list they built together (relationship and display). Observation: one recording divides into several experiences according to how it is heard; one feature, playback, does not determine the experience.

Board Games

  • Catan: collecting resources (ownership), extending roads (achievement), and negotiation (relationship) overlap in one game, giving different pleasures to different people. Observation: overlapping experiences interlock rather than remain separate—you must negotiate to collect resources.
  • Descent / Gloomhaven: achievement-oriented combat players and story-oriented players coexist at the same table. Observation: even people playing together under the same rules undergo different experiences; one table is an intersection of many experiences.

Theme Parks / Spatial Experiences

  • Disneyland: in the same park, one person buys the achievement of riding attractions, another a relationship with characters, and another time spent dwelling in atmosphere and world. Observation: a single admission ticket becomes a ticket to different experiences for different people, and the circulation routes are designed not to block those divisions.

General Apps / Fandom

  • Instagram: one person opens the same app for display (curating a feed), another for relationship (messages), and another for discovery (Explore). Observation: each bottom tab is effectively divided into an entrance for an experience type.
  • LEGO / LEGO building apps: the tactile pleasure of making (sensation), ownership of the finished object, and exhibition and display all fit inside one activity. Observation: the feature is only “assembly,” yet it carries three experiences; it is a model of one feature filling several experience cells.
  • YouTube: one person opens the same app to learn through lectures and documentaries (understanding), another to see updates from subscribed channels (relationship), another for background sound before sleep (sensation and ritual), and another for an unexpected video brought by the algorithm (discovery). Observation: the first screen, the Home feed, is assembled as a different experience entrance for each person; identify whose entrance our first screen is.
  • Strava: although it records running and cycling, one GPS-recording feature overlaps personal records (achievement), exploring new routes (discovery), segment rankings and Kudos (display and relationship), and exercise at the same time every day (ritual). Observation: a model of one feature filling several experience cells, and a criterion for choosing which feature to put first in the first thirty minutes.

Offline / Everyday Life

  • Watching baseball at the stadium: one person watches the same game through strategy and statistics (understanding), another enjoys the atmosphere of chants and food (sensation and ritual), another treats it as time with companions (relationship), and another collects uniforms and merchandise (ownership and display). Observation: one piece of content, the game, divides into several experiences in the stands; the assumption that “fun is competition” is only half true even at the ballpark.
  • Hiking: one person climbs the same mountain to certify reaching the summit (achievement and display), another for scenery and air (sensation), another to talk with a companion (relationship), and another as a rhythm of walking the same route every week (ritual). Observation: the content, the mountain, is one, yet there are as many reasons to climb as people, and the entrance tells none of them they are wrong.
  • Book clubs: the same book is an experience of understanding and world when read alone, relationship when discussed together, and display through reviews and proof of reading. Observation: activities around content, rather than the content alone, change the experience type; consider which layers of activity can surround our game.

Chapter 13. What Buttons Symbolize: Dissecting Simulated Experience

This collection shows that the chapter's dissection of the sign on the screen, the signifier, from the real event it points to, the signified, works the same way beyond games. A sign is genuine only when an event stands behind it; an eventless sign is exposed faster the more spectacular it is; and the size of the presentation must match the size of the event. The cases are grouped by medium, and each ends with an “Observation” describing what a designer should watch. There are two questions for reading: what experience does this sign point to, and does that experience actually happen?

Video Games

  • Diablo III's presentation for legendary items: in the 2012 game, when a legendary item drops, a weighty sound rings out, an orange beam rises from the floor, and a star appears on the minimap, making the moment impossible to miss. Early after release, however, the “rarity” represented by the sign often conflicted with actual performance, making the beam close to an empty sign. It is often said that sign and event aligned only after the loot system was substantially reworked. Observation: whether the weight of the event is honestly reflected in the size of the sign; the order of fixing the event, the value of the drop, before enlarging the sign.
  • RPG level numbers and experience bars: a rising number points to growth, but without the event of crossing a wall once impassable, only the number rises empty. Observation: what the user becomes able to do when a level rises; whether number and event are paired.
  • Peggle's “Extreme Fever” finale: in the 2007 game, when the last orange peg is struck, time slows, the screen follows the ball, Beethoven's “Ode to Joy” erupts, and rainbows and fireworks cross the screen. The presentation is extravagantly exaggerated yet not false, because a real event—clearing the stage—must precede it. Observation: a large event must come first for a large presentation to read as a large cheer; exaggeration itself is not a sin.
  • PlayStation's “easy platinum” trophies: the highest-tier trophy originally signified accomplishing something difficult. As mass-produced games that award it after a few button presses and a few minutes flooded the market, the sign lost weight. Major trophy-tracking sites reportedly began excluding such games from rankings, and the platform went as far as removing them from the store and issuing guidelines warning that repeat-offender accounts would be penalized. Observation: a badge issued without the event of qualification reduces the value of everyone bearing that badge; the issuance standard is the value of the sign.
  • The craft of game “juice”: screen shake, particles, and impact effects dress actions with satisfaction, but the craft's guidance is known to say that presentation should echo the game's core play. Observation: industry craft itself states this chapter's conclusion—presentation is a mirror that enlarges a real event, not a stage that invents an absent one.

Live-Action Film

  • Chekhov's gun: Anton Chekhov wrote that if a gun hangs on the wall in the first act, it must later be fired; if it will not be fired, it should not hang there. Observation: a story itself demands that an event follow any sign placed before us; count the guns hanging on our screen that never fire.
  • The horror “cat scare”: tense music foretells a threat, but only something harmless, such as a bird crashing through a window, appears. The Resident Evil series uses this sign by deceiving once with a false cue and then releasing the real threat. Observation: repeated false promises of an event make audiences stop trusting the sign itself, though an intentional betrayal that deceives once and then delivers the real thing works within the genre's agreement.
  • The lawsuit over the Drive (2011) trailer: it is often recounted that a viewer who went to the theater after seeing a trailer cut like a chase-action film demanded a refund and an end to the advertising when the feature proved closer to a taciturn drama, even filing suit against the distributor. Observation: a trailer is also a sign pointing to the event of the feature; when the promised event and the actual product conflict, the cost returns as refund demands and reputational damage.

Literature

  • Exaggerated blurbs on covers and belly bands: if a sign such as “the book of a lifetime” is not matched by the event of the text, readers doubt the publisher's next recommendation too. Observation: trust in a sign is diminished at the publisher level, not only one book at a time.
  • Macbeth's soliloquy: Macbeth calls life a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Observation: one line compresses what remains when the signs of loud sound and passion have no event of meaning behind them.

Live-Action TV / Drama

  • Exaggerated captions and sound effects in reality shows: tense music and giant captions inflate an uneventful scene. Observation: viewers notice the presentation the moment the sign becomes larger than the event; frequent inflation reduces the value of truly large scenes.
  • Sitcom laugh tracks: beginning in the 1950s, sound engineer Charley Douglass used a “Laff Box” of prerecorded laughter, adding and removing it scene by scene to place a sign saying “this is the funny part.” But when a scene was not funny, the track sounded more awkward. As viewers gradually stopped trusting the sign, its use declined. Observation: directing a response through a sign backfires when it conflicts with the event; audience response is made by the event, not the sign.

Music

  • Excessive Auto-Tune and crowd-chorus effects: they imitate the event of emotion through sound processing, but when the song contains no such emotion, the effect floats free. Observation: postproduction can enlarge only an emotion that already exists; an absent event cannot be created in the mix.
  • Milli Vanilli: the sign of singers on stage was perfect, but the event of singing was performed by others. A lip-synced recording skipped onstage and exposed them, and their 1990 Best New Artist Grammy was reportedly rescinded for the first time in the award's history. Observation: when only the sign, the appearance of performance, exists and the event, actual singing, is empty, even the applause already received is annulled after exposure.

Comics

  • Speed lines and written sound effects: even if signs that something major is happening fill the panel, exaggeration alone remains when the actual event is small. Observation: matching the size of the sign to the size of the event is equally required in panel presentation.

General Apps

  • Empty social-media clones: they have Like buttons but no people exchanging likes. They copy the sign while leaving the event empty. Observation: when a feature, the sign, is copied from a competitor, the people and activity that made it work, the event, do not follow.
  • LinkedIn skill endorsements: unlike the profile-strength bar, which works because it is tied to real benefits, endorsements that anyone can give anyone with one click accumulate even from people who have never worked together, blurring what they prove. Observation: even within one service, trust divides between signs with and without the event of verification.
  • Red-dot notifications with no news: some apps place a red dot on an icon when there is nothing to tap. When the sign “a new event exists” repeats without an event, users soon learn to ignore the dot entirely. Such designs for capturing attention are also discussed as dark patterns. Observation: the speed at which a sign's currency loses value; count the dots and badges on our screen printed without events.
  • Fake close buttons in ads: some ads draw an X that leads to the advertiser's page rather than closing, or make it deliberately too small to press. The moment the sign “close” betrays the event of closing, users doubt the screen's other signs too. Observation: one sign's betrayal spreads into a cost of trust for the whole screen.

History / General Cases

  • Potemkin villages: the story says that along Catherine II's inspection route, only handsome village facades were erected, dismantled after the procession passed, and rebuilt on the next riverbank, though many consider the anecdote itself exaggerated. Observation: regardless of its historical truth, the phrase became a universal name for an empty facade because the structure of a sign without substance is so common.

Offline / Everyday Life

  • Nonfunctioning pedestrian buttons: a 2004 New York City report said that more than 2,500 of the city's 3,250 pedestrian buttons remained disconnected after signal automation. Some elevator Close buttons are often said to share the same fate. They are placebo buttons that accept the sign of pressing without the event of changing the signal. Observation: a false sign left to soothe the need for control works until exposed; after exposure, the sign of buttons as a whole is doubted.
  • Restaurant signs claiming “the original”: when several restaurants in one alley all hang “original” signs, no sign proves the event of being first. Anyone can hang the sign, while the event happened at only one establishment. Observation: the more common unverifiable signs become, the more the value of the entire sign falls; the alley shares the structure of “easy platinum.”

Chapter 14. The Harmony of Surprise and Familiarity: Four Principles and Flow

This collection gathers cases from beyond games that repeat the chapter's claims: four principles make the first screen readable—intuitiveness, familiarity, consistency, and a low barrier to entry; the mixture rule is “make one unfamiliar and three familiar”; and novelty should be placed in the result beyond the hand rather than in the controls beneath it. The cases are grouped by medium, and each ends with an “Observation” describing what a designer should watch. There is one way to read them: count what is familiar, which single thing is new, and whether novelty is concentrated in one place or scattered.

Video Games

  • Super Mario Bros. 1-1: without a line of text, the 1985 game teaches players within their first few steps to avoid and stomp a Goomba, hit a question block, and distinguish a mushroom from an enemy. Miyamoto is often quoted in substance as saying that the moment players discover for themselves what to do, the game becomes theirs. Observation: the archetype of an explanation-free opening that teaches through flow; the amount is cut so only one new thing appears on each screen.
  • Half-Life's opening tram: the 1998 game does not begin with a cutscene that takes control away. It places players on a slow monorail, lets them look around, and teaches through their hands that doors respond when approached. The environment itself teaches without guidance text. Observation: beginning through experience instead of explanation; keeping familiar first-person controls and concentrating novelty in the world.
  • Resident Evil 4: rather than asking players to choose difficulty before starting, the 2005 game is known to read combat performance through a hidden score and adjust enemy aggression, durability, and drops in real time—tighter when a player performs well, looser when they struggle. Observation: adaptive difficulty that lets the game adjust without asking users to declare their skill; removing the wall of a first choice before newcomers.
  • Animal Crossing: there is no game over or failure screen, and Tom Nook waits without pressing players even if they do not repay their debt. After short tutorial tasks, it releases them to play their own way without a fixed answer. Observation: undefeated onboarding that does not turn failure into a verdict; rhythm and attachment can grow without game over.
  • Portal: the 2007 game preserves the familiar first-person-shooter gestures of WASD movement and mouse aiming, concentrating novelty into one thing, a portal gun connecting two places. Early test chambers let players fire one portal and then connect two, learning rules one piece at a time through their hands. Observation: a textbook mixture of “make three familiar and one unfamiliar”; novelty is placed beyond the hand, in space, not beneath it, in the controls.
  • QWOP / Getting Over It: counterexamples that deliberately break familiar controls and pile up only novelty. The unfamiliarity is their identity, but it is a wall to many newcomers. Observation: unfamiliarity itself can be sold as identity, but that path targets the minority who read unfamiliarity as challenge rather than the majority.
  • Dark Souls: the tutorial's first boss demon is a fight designed to encourage an under-equipped player to escape rather than confront it. “YOU DIED” and the bonfire checkpoint combine into the signal “try again after death.” Observation: the same death screen reads as an invitation to gamers and a verdict to ordinary people; a single failure presentation is translated in opposite directions according to origin.
  • Angry Birds / Candy Crush: the first stage yields to a finger, and difficulty rises only after people decide to stay. Candy Crush is known to continue refining hard stages during live operation. Observation: the first stage's difficulty is an entrance guide rather than an exam; bind the difficulty curve so it does not outrun the skill curve.

What to Observe: The greater the anxiety around an action, as with money, the clearer the meaningful answer must be. If the answer is vague, people reopen the transfer history to check it. That act of reconfirmation is itself an indicator that the third layer is weak.
  • Smartphone haptics: A single vibration at the fingertip immediately returns the lowest-layer answer that the screen was pressed. What to Observe: When one lowest-layer answer underlies every screen, examine how much total silence disappears. What to Observe: Treat this as a field where two strategies—covering and clearing—divide over the same distracted viewer. Compare which one more accurately assumes the viewer's state.

This permanent on-screen score display is said to have become established in broadcasts during the 1990s. What to Observe: Treat it as an original device that states "the current state" without being asked. What to Observe: See the asymmetry through which design made for panic, the most severe distracted state, remains legible to everyone in ordinary conditions. The curb-cut principle has long been common sense in safety design.
  • Colored route guidance in hospitals and airports: Instead of explaining an entire complicated route, one colored line on the floor can be followed without getting lost. What to Observe: See the method of providing one next step after another instead of making someone memorize the whole map. It does not merely reduce explanation; it removes it and leaves only the signal.
  • From dot to dot on a subway map: It discards real geography, leaving straight and colored lines so that a person only needs to follow one color from the current dot to a destination dot. This approach is said to have originated with the diagrammatic London Underground map of the 1930s. General Apps

  • Apps with one-handed mode and large bottom buttons: They place what must be pressed now where the thumb can reach in a shaking place, rather than turning an upper-corner button into no button at all. What to Observe: Confirm with your hands the main text's sentence that an unreachable button effectively does not exist. Hold the phone in one hand and press each button on your screen.
  • Google's empty first screen: One search box sits in the center of a white background, so even a newcomer knows at a glance what to do. The empty space around it is not vacant but a device that gathers the eye on that one thing. What to Observe: See how emptiness itself is a function. A two-light arrangement is generally said to assign immediate action to a red master warning and inspection to an amber master caution. Which component failed and why is checked on the next panel. The first signal consists only of color and blinking. What to Observe: See the two-stage division of labor in which attention is captured first and content is left to the next step. It also lets us infer in reverse what breaks when the first signal tries to carry the explanation too.
  • The iPhone's silent switch: For many years, it was a physical switch on the side. Without turning on the screen, a person could feel its position with a fingertip to know whether silent mode was active and confirm it at a glance through the exposed orange color. Recent models have replaced it with a pressable button. What to Observe: See a design that makes one state legible through two channels: touch and a sideways glance.   • Hades (2020): Death is not the end of progress but a beat in the story. Every return home after death brings different dialogue from characters such as Hypnos, who points out what defeated the player this time. What to Observe: See a structure that attaches a new story to every failure, making death itself a reward. If immediately after failure is the moment when people are most likely to leave, this example decides in advance what to give them at precisely that moment.
  • Cuphead's boss retry screen (2017): After death, a progress line shows which stage of the boss was reached, putting "You got this far" first, then immediately restarts the boss. What to Observe: Notice that the failure screen shows progress before loss. When progress is visible, the same failure becomes one a person wants to try again.
