Drop the Adjectives and Take Hold of the Dials

Adjectives Are Not Input Values

Imagine a scene in an Eastern dynastic drama: in a year of drought, with cracked rice paddies behind him, the king prays to the sky for rain for the first time at midday. It is not difficult to decide that the scene should feel ominous and solemn. The problem comes next. Ask what, exactly, it means to write the scene ominously, and the answer stalls. There is no key labeled ominousness on the keyboard.

Adjectives such as ominous, lonely, and solemn describe what readers and viewers feel after they have read or watched the scene. They are outputs, not values that a creator can enter directly. What a creator can actually manipulate are such things as the direction of the light, what is suspended in the air, which sounds are present or absent, and how quickly a character moves. These are the inputs. The proposition of this series is that atmosphere is not an adjective but a set of parameters. The distinction between outputs and inputs is the starting point for everything that follows.

A level designer building an ominous forest in Unreal Engine never enters a value called ominousness. The designer raises fog density, lowers exposure, shifts color grading toward low saturation, and removes birdsong from the ambient sound track. Inside a game engine, atmosphere literally exists as a collection of numerical sliders. A film set works the same way. Rather than writing “lonely” on a storyboard, a cinematographer specifies backlighting, a long shot, low saturation, and shot duration. “The audience feels in adjectives; the maker builds in parameters” is not a metaphor. It describes working practice in both industries, and the distinction is not merely a matter of skill. It is how atmosphere is produced across media.

The purpose of this series is to assemble the full list of those parameters in a form writers and other creators can use. In web fiction, webtoons, television, film, and games alike, the materials of atmosphere can be classified into eight layers, each with several adjustable dials. Part 1 introduces the eight layers and their operating principles. Part 2 explains how to blend and assign multiple emotions. Part 3 provides a dictionary for translating adjectives into parameters and a set of directorial presets.

A creator who thinks only in adjectives can make atmospheres only within the limits of the adjectives they know. Individual words cannot mark every intermediate point between ominousness and loneliness. Dials, by contrast, are continuous. They can specify every point between two states and can therefore produce atmospheres that have not yet been named. If adjectives are a problem of vocabulary, dials are a problem of resolution.

The Eight Layers

The eight layers are arranged from the world toward the observer. The first three—air, light, and color—describe the physical state of the world. The next two—material and body—are objects situated within that world. The sixth, viewpoint, is the position from which those objects are observed. The final two—sound and time—are dimensions other than visual information.

Air: The Medium Between Subject and Viewer

The first layer is air. It includes every medium that fills the space between subject and viewer: fog, dust, smoke, rain, snow, humidity, and heat haze. Three values are set here: density, or how thickly the space is filled; type, such as water or dust; and uniformity, or whether the medium is spread evenly or concentrated to one side.

Air comes first because this single layer changes several other layers at once. Fog shortens visible distance and hides faraway objects, which viewers interpret as isolation and the unknown. At the same time, fog diffuses light, softens the edges of shadows, and lowers color saturation. One adjustment therefore changes light and color as well. The shafts of light in Blade Runner are an air effect before they are a lighting effect: without smog and vapor in the air, the light would not appear as a column. Akira Kurosawa repeatedly used wind and dust in duel scenes for an equally clear function. Dust in motion destabilizes a static composition, and viewers read that instability as tension. Humidity works in the same way. A single line describing the stickiness of a tropical night can communicate frayed nerves without explaining them separately.

This is also the layer writers use least. Many writers will spend ten lines describing walls and roof tiles, yet rarely spend one line on the air. Even so, “the air was dry and acrid” establishes the key of a scene faster than ten sentences about the architecture.

Light: Direction Comes Before Brightness

Light has four values: direction, hardness, color temperature, and contrast. Beginners most often overlook direction, because the first question is not whether the light is bright or dark but where it comes from.

Light from below is used in horror because it is an unnatural direction. Sun, moon, and lamps ordinarily cast light downward. Light from beneath reverses the familiar placement of facial shadows, causing viewers to perceive a known face as strange. Holding a flashlight beneath the chin while telling a ghost story is the folk version of this principle. Returning the light above the subject can also create an effect. The Godfather cinematographer Gordon Willis placed light almost vertically over Don Corleone, casting shadow into his eye sockets. When viewers cannot see the eyes, they cannot read the character's intent, and that unreadability itself becomes intimidating.

Hardness is a property of shadow. Direct light makes sharply bounded shadows; diffuse light makes soft ones. This is why horror does not depend on darkness alone. Under hard midday light, where shadows shrink and exposure is inescapable, there is nowhere to hide. Western duels staged at high noon can exploit this effect. Color temperature is a physical value measured in kelvins. Two practical reference points are 3200K tungsten light and 5600K daylight. Lower values appear more orange and higher values more blue-white, so the same room can feel warm under 3200K and cold or institutional above 6000K. Contrast is not brightness itself but the ratio between the brightest and darkest areas in the frame; Part 3 discusses standard working ratios.

Midday light should, however, be understood as an effect that strengthens the exposed quality of a Western duel. It is not evidence that lighting alone created the entire convention.

Color: A Relationship, Not a Hue

Color involves saturation, palette width, value, and color contrast. A common mistake is to read colors as isolated symbols: red means passion, blue means sadness. Such one-to-one charts rarely work in practice. The effect of color comes not from a hue by itself but from the relationship among colors.

The same red becomes an alarm signal against a gray field and mere background within an entirely red frame. Lower saturation tends to be read as pastness, memory, or loss; higher saturation tends to be read as presentness and vitality. Narrowing the palette to one family organizes the emotional direction of the image, while spreading it across complementary colors separates elements and produces tension.

Pixar is among the studios that manage color most systematically. Before full production, it arranges small color studies of the entire film into a color script that designs the emotional curve through changing color values. The opening of Up is a representative result. The compressed account of Carl and Ellie's life begins with higher saturation and warmer color temperature. After Ellie's death, the present-day image drops sharply in saturation. Most viewers do not consciously register the change; they simply feel that the scene has become lonely. Color often works while its manipulation remains invisible, making it one of the least conspicuous interventions among the eight layers.

Material: Information Recorded in Things

The fourth layer consists of the things that fill image and page. Its variables are density—whether the space is full or empty; texture—whether things are new or worn; and selection—what remains in the frame and what is removed.

Objects record information about the world. Rust, grime, and wear communicate the age of a world and the state of its maintenance without dialogue. Mad Max: Fury Road conveys time after civilizational collapse not through captions but through rusted metal and cracked leather. For the same reason, one prop can replace several lines of exposition. A cracked ritual vessel on an altar already tells us that the rite is old and its keepers have fallen on hard times. At the extremes of density stand the empty monastic cell and the room so crowded that there is nowhere to step. Emptiness can read as purity or deprivation; fullness can read as abundance or compulsion. Which reading prevails is determined not by this layer alone but by the values of the others. The layers do not exist independently; they refer to one another.

Clothing deserves separate treatment because, while other objects record the state of the world, clothes are values a character selected before entering the scene. The world does not decide what the character wears. Clothing therefore belongs to the material layer while also carrying information about character and judgment.

Body: A Highly Sensitive Sensor

The fifth layer is the character's body. Its materials are facial expression, the speed and amplitude of movement, distance between characters, direction of gaze, and stillness.

The body on screen is one of the main channels through which viewers sense atmosphere. Viewers read tension from expression and posture, so a crowd with rigid shoulders can support tension without relying exclusively on lighting or music. Speed creates another effect, as Anton Chigurh demonstrates in No Country for Old Men. He is threatening not because he is fast but because he never hurries. When everyone around one person moves frantically and that person alone moves slowly, viewers read the difference in speed as a difference in control.

Distance has an established field of study: proxemics. Anthropologist Edward T. Hall divided interpersonal distance into intimate, personal, social, and public zones. Applied to creation, this means that the gap between two people in a frame displays the state of their relationship. Half a step forward can read as threat; half a step back as withdrawal. A change in spacing can transmit as much information as a line of dialogue. Gaze direction indicates where attention lies. When everyone looks one way and a single person looks elsewhere, that divergent vector becomes narrative information without additional explanation. Stillness is the equivalent of silence in this layer: when a character who has been moving stops, the change itself becomes a signal. The same principle returns in the sound layer. Facial expression is so finely divisible that it has its own notation at the level of facial muscles; Part 2 introduces that system.

Here, the body is one major channel of atmosphere, not an absolute layer that is always more sensitive than every other one. The posture of a crowd does not prove tension on its own; it supports that reading in combination with other staging choices.

Viewpoint: Shot Size Is Emotional Distance

The sixth layer is the observing position. It includes angle, shot size, negative space, tilt, and symmetry.

Shot size regulates emotional rather than merely physical distance. In a close-up, the face is all the viewer can see. The option to look elsewhere is removed, and this enforced attention can read as intimacy or pressure. An extreme long shot reduces a character to a dot, encouraging the judgment that the character's circumstances are small beside the scale of the setting. A low angle makes us look up; a high angle makes a person resemble a piece on a map. Tilting the horizon signals a loss of balance. Negative space is not an absence of information but a field viewers fill with prediction. Leave a large empty area behind a character and viewers begin to anticipate what might enter it. Horror uses precisely this anticipation.

At its maximum, symmetry can create unease. Kubrick's one-point-perspective corridors are a familiar example. Real spaces are rarely ordered to that degree, so viewers classify an excessively ordered image as abnormal. For this dial, both extremes—disorder and excessive order—can produce unease, while stability lies nearer the middle.

Sound: Two Kinds of Silence

The seventh layer includes the presence or absence of music, the number of ambient layers, and the kind of silence.

Music is among the strongest materials in the eight layers, which makes it difficult to handle. The moment sad strings begin, viewers recognize an instruction to feel sad, and an emotion produced by instruction can be weaker than one the audience reaches on its own. The removal of background score from most of No Country for Old Men is calculation rather than mere restraint. Without music, viewers receive no advance notice of the next scene's emotion and are exposed without preparation to footsteps, wind, and compressed air.

Silence is the most misunderstood material in this layer and must be divided in two. Quiet filled with crickets, wind, or a distant dog is full silence: it signals that the environment is operating normally and is therefore often read as stable. Vacuum silence is the absence of a sound that ought to be present—a forest without birds or a playground without children. Much of what the adjective ominous points to is not darkness but this absence. The sense that something expected is missing is an old danger response, and the alarm works by subtraction rather than addition.

Time: Unit Length Creates Rhythm

The final layer is time. It concerns unit length, rhythmic regularity, duration, and repetition.

The unit of film is the shot; the unit of prose is the sentence. A rapid sequence of short shots raises arousal, while a long take lowers it and fixes attention on one subject. Prose operates similarly: a run of short sentences behaves like fast cutting, while periodic prose behaves like a long take. The difference between writers who recognize and control sentence length as an editing unit and those who do not is comparable to the difference between a film with an editor and one without.

Hitchcock offered a famous example of duration. If a bomb under a table explodes without warning, the audience is startled for a few seconds. If the audience is shown the bomb first while the characters continue talking in ignorance, the entire conversation becomes suspense. Tension comes not only from the event but also from the length of time placed before it; suspense is a technique for extending that interval. Repetition creates a rule, and a rule makes violation possible. When an action repeats, viewers register a pattern; when the next instance diverges, they process the deviation as an event. The Kuleshov effect is a canonical example of how shot arrangement can change interpretation. Details of the original experiment differ among accounts, and the magnitude of the effect is not always the same. It is therefore safer to say that the arrangement of shots participates in meaning than that meaning exists only between shots.

Four Principles for Turning the Dials—and a Fifth

A list of materials does not produce a scene by itself. Four principles govern how their values are set.

First is baseline and deviation. A work's tone and manner is the default set of these dials, while the atmosphere of a scene is the direction and degree of its deviation from that baseline. Atmosphere is therefore relative rather than absolute. A bright morning in a horror story can feel unusually ominous for this reason. Darkness in a dark world is the baseline and carries little information; brightness in a dark world is a deviation and therefore becomes information. The terminology follows: tone and manner is the work-wide baseline, while mood or atmosphere is the scene's current value. They are the same values read at different time scales.

Second is the dominant. Only one or two dials in a scene should be pushed to an extreme; the rest should remain neutral. The term comes from Russian Formalism, where it denotes an element that subordinates the others. In practical terms, raising everything creates noise rather than emphasis. Fog at maximum, darkness at maximum, music at maximum, and slow motion all at once will be judged not as horror but as excess. When everything is emphasized, nothing is.

Third is modulation. Atmosphere is perceived more strongly at a moment of change than in a steady state, because human sensation responds to rates of change rather than absolute quantity alone. Eyes adapt to continuous darkness, but the instant a bright room goes dark cannot be ignored. Skilled staging therefore designs the moment a value changes—when music stops or a crowd falls quiet—rather than only the value itself. A value that should change but does not can work just as strongly. If wind ought to rise when the ritual prayer ends and nothing changes, that non-change becomes the scene's largest event.

Fourth is synchronization. A value should arise from the state of the world. Fog laid over a scene without narrative cause is decoration, and viewers may classify ungrounded staging as manipulation. Dust and a white sky in a drought story, by contrast, are values derived from the setting and can be pushed to an extreme without appearing arbitrary. Before changing a dial, ask one question: is this value grounded in the world's present state?

The fifth principle is blending and assignment, the subject of Part 2. The discussion so far has assumed one target emotion, but real scenes are rarely singular. Most resemble solemnity 95 plus doubt 5. More important than the ratio itself is where, among the eight layers, that five percent is assigned.

Medium as Renderer: Selective Rendering in Prose

The eight layers remain the same across media. What changes is the method of rendering.

Film and television forcibly record all eight layers. Once a camera is running, light, color, air, and material enter the frame whether or not the creator explicitly selected them. The dominant matters especially in visual media: without choosing which layers to control and which to neutralize, the image becomes a mere record of the world. In webtoons, a panel handles viewpoint and time at once. Panel size is shot size, while gutters and vertical-scroll spacing create editing rhythm. Games hand viewpoint to the player, so designers guide attention indirectly through air, light, and sound. Players often move from dark spaces toward brighter ones, and game lighting uses this tendency to shape routes.

Prose has the opposite condition: only what sentences render exists. If light is not described, the scene is not dark; the reader's constructed image simply lacks lighting information. The governing method of prose is therefore selective rendering. The writer fixes values for all eight layers, chooses only two or three to render in sentences, and keeps the rest as private settings. The crucial decision is which values to bring onto the page. This is the prose version of the dominant. Describing all eight creates overload; describing two without fixing the others produces later details that contradict earlier ones. Six established but unspoken values keep the two or three spoken ones consistent, and readers perceive that consistency as density.

Writing the Rain Ritual as a Specification

The practical procedure is to write an eight-line dial sheet before drafting, one line per layer. It should take no more than three minutes. Write neutral where no value is selected, because neutrality is also a decision. Once the eight lines are complete, mark the one or two dominants that will be pushed to an extreme. For prose, take one further step and select the two or three values that will actually be rendered in sentences. Before drafting, the sheet is a blueprint; after drafting, it becomes a diagnostic tool. When a finished scene feels weak and the reason is unclear, reverse-engineering it into the sheet usually reveals either that it has no dominant or that all eight values have clustered around the middle.

Return to the opening scene. Written without adjectives and only as layer values, it becomes:

Scene: the first rain ritual, midday
Target emotion: solemnity. Monochrome, 100 percent purity

Air: dry; fine dust; heat haze on the horizon; medium density
Light: direct midday light; minimal shadow; color temperature above 6000K; strong contrast
Color: low saturation; yellow-brown monochrome; a white sky drained of blue
Material: cracked paddy soil; a fractured ritual vessel; faded uniforms; maximum wear
Body: only the king moves; the crowd remains still; slow movement with small amplitude
Viewpoint: first shot from above, figures reduced to dots on dry earth; one low-angle shot of the altar
Sound: no music; minimal ambience; no wind; no insects
Time: long duration; do not shorten the silent interval after the ritual text ends

There is not a single emotional adjective in this sheet, yet creators in different media can produce comparable results from it. A web-fiction writer may render only air, sound, and time in prose. A webtoon artist may translate the overhead view into a large panel and the low altar angle into a narrow one. A director can distribute most of the sheet directly to camera, art, and sound departments. Give ten people the instruction “make it solemn” and they will produce ten different results; give them this sheet and the variance narrows. The difference becomes greater in collaboration with AI. An adjective prompt tends toward an average learned result, while a parameter prompt can move much closer to specified values. Merely typing numbers does not make a model obey them, however. Part 2 explains how to translate values into executable instructions.

One defect remains in this specification: one hundred percent solemnity is a poster, not a scene. Actual emotion rarely remains singular. For a scene to belong to a character, it needs a small amount of an alien emotion. In that motionless crowd, one person should be looking not at the sky but toward the sluice gate. If the blend is solemnity 95 and doubt 5, where should that five be assigned, and to which material in which layer? Part 2 addresses this method of blending and assignment.
