Summary
No number of impressive proper nouns will bring a world into focus. Worldview cannot be built from characters, logos, symbols, and concepts alone. For a world to feel like a world, people must be able to tell what is possible and impossible within it, which actions produce rewards, and which actions alter relationships. This chapter calls these conditions the physics and society of a world. In a fictional world, physics may include magic, technology, space, time, and the conditions of life. In today's IP industry, physics also appears in a platform's recommendation structure, release cycle, playback method, access permissions, payment structure, and interface habits. Society concerns which roles fans assume under those conditions, which words and actions they learn, and what sense of belonging they acquire. For an IP to become a fandom community, designing only the world within the content is insufficient. Its design must also encompass the physics and society of the access environment in which fans actually live.
1. A World Comes into Focus Through How It Works, Not What It Is Called
Rudimentary worldview planning often begins with a list of names. A world can look abundant when planners enumerate the names of countries, organizations, characters, events, and symbols. Yet having many names does not make a world clear. Readers feel a world distinctly not when they have memorized many names, but when they can predict what may happen within it. Predictability is the most basic form of trust in a worldview.
Suppose magic exists in a fantasy world. The nature of that world changes completely depending on whether magic is available to everyone, requires training, carries a cost, or has forbidden uses. Even under the same name, magic that anyone can use easily resembles an everyday technology, while magic reserved for one class becomes a technology of power. Magic that consumes life force creates ethical questions; state-licensed magic creates institutional and criminal questions. The power of worldview comes not from the quantity of its setting elements, but from the way those elements create conditions for action.
The same is true of real-world IP. Discussions of a K-pop group's worldview commonly begin with symbols, colors, logos, album narratives, and clues in music videos. These matter. Yet fans do not enter a world only by interpreting symbols. They experience it through the platform on which they first saw a video, the short clip repeatedly shown to them, the livestream notification they received, the membership access they purchased, the merchandise they awaited, and the community language they learned. At this point, platforms, communities, and product structures cease to be mere distribution channels and become ways in which the world works.
The questions required to read contemporary IP worldview therefore do not stop at, "What does this world say?" The more important question is, "Which actions does this world make people repeat?" Without repeated actions, the world ends as something to appreciate. Once repeated actions emerge, it enters the rhythm of everyday life. Fandom communities are built upon precisely these repeated actions.
2. Platforms Operate Like the Physical Laws of a World
Physical laws set the limits of movement within a world. If objects fall differently, time flows at another speed, or energy transforms under different conditions, the same event belongs to a different world. Platforms play a similar role in digital IP environments. They determine how content is discovered, how long it remains present, how it repeats, and which actions lead to subsequent actions. Fans do not use platforms as mere backgrounds. They encounter IP within the speeds and pathways prescribed by those platforms.
YouTube creates routes into content through long videos, short videos, recommended videos, subscription feeds, search, comments, and community posts. What matters here is not speculating about the details of its algorithm, but recognizing that the character of a first experience differs depending on whether a fan meets an IP by "searching for it," having it "recommended," or encountering it "during continuous playback." A world reached through search has an entrance with clear intent; a world reached through recommendation has an entrance shaped by chance and familiarity.
TikTok creates another kind of physics. In an environment where short videos follow one another rapidly, a single scene, repeatable movement, or instantly recognizable expression and sound gains more power than a complete narrative. When an IP spreads on TikTok, fans do not first understand the world's full setting. They first imitate a movement, line, expression, or syllable. The world is broken into compressed units, and those fragments travel as they are varied again.
Streaming music platforms such as Spotify create the physics of playlists and repeated listening. They do not make users experience music only by album. Users encounter music through playlists, recommendations, saving, repeat playback, artist pages, and promotional tools used before and after release. Music IP is rearranged here according to the logic of mood, situation, repeatability, and discoverability rather than the overall flow of a narrative. An album's worldview remains important, but the listening environment decomposes and reassembles it in a different order.
This physics can also change the form of content itself. Streaming revenue is commonly understood to require a track to play for a certain length of time, and many analyses argue that this reward rule has affected music production. Songs have grown shorter, with more arrangements moving the chorus forward so that it is heard from the beginning. The point is not the exact number of seconds but the structure. When reward rules set by a platform operate like a world's physics, creators naturally choose certain forms within that physics. The same pattern has recurred in other media. The recording limit of SP records, which held roughly three minutes per side, established a standard length for popular music, and radio broadcasting reinforced that format. Playlist-centered listening later privileged the immediate impression of a single song over an album's narrative. When reward rules change, the form of the work changes too. In the language of worldview, a platform determines the gravity of the environment in which content lives.
Fan platforms have another form of physics. Services such as Weverse and Bubble, Discord servers, and membership communities are not merely places where fans gather. Through access permissions, notifications, posts, livestreams, comments, messages, membership benefits, and community rules, they determine "who may enter how far." Interfaces, payment structures, and notification systems divide the inside of the world from the outside. A fan is at once a viewer of content, a user with permissions, a waiting subscriber, and a responding member of a community.
In this sense, a platform is not outside a world. It is the physics through which fans sense the world. Whether an IP centers on video, music, characters, livestreams, or commerce, platform physics changes how its worldview feels. The same worldview becomes an interpretable visual narrative on YouTube, an imitable gesture on TikTok, a repeated mood on Spotify, and a relationship of access and waiting on a fan platform.
3. Communities Create the Social Structure of a World
Physics alone does not complete a world. A world also needs society. Society concerns who occupies the center, who remains at the margins, which rules are respected, which actions are prohibited, and which words mark someone as an insider. The official organization does not determine the entire social structure of a fandom community. It is made jointly by official platform design, fans' autonomous norms, established customs, generational language, commercial structures, and transformative fan culture.
The social structure of fandom appears in differentiated roles. Some fans organize information quickly, some translate, and some edit short videos. Some collect information on buying merchandise, some show newcomers where to begin, and others record their on-site experiences at concert venues and pop-up stores. These are not official positions, but they perform real functions within a community. Fandom is not simply a collection of tastes. It is a society in which roles emerge.
This differentiation of roles also connects to the IP's economic structure. Merchandise, tickets, memberships, subscriptions, limited content, and licensed products change social behavior within fandom. Someone obtains information first, someone organizes purchasing routes, someone shares inventory and shipping updates, and someone posts proof and reviews. Consumption does not remain an individual purchase in this process; it becomes the production of community knowledge. This is precisely where the fandom economy and subscription economy meet IP worldview. Spending money ceases to be a mere payment and becomes a ritual for confirming one's place and relationships within a world.
The community's social structure also appears in language. Every fandom has abbreviations, jokes, taboo terms, symbolic words, introductory questions, and recurring memes. This language compresses interpretations of worldview. Outsiders may not readily understand it, while insiders share long contexts through a single short word. For worldview to become community ultimately also means that explanatory prose decreases as insider language increases. The longer people inhabit the same world, the larger the domain in which they no longer need to explain everything at length.
Yet the stronger a social structure becomes, the greater the risk of exclusion. Insider language creates belonging but may block newcomers. Strong norms protect a community but can produce excessive surveillance and conflict. Fandom autonomy enriches creation and interpretation, but may collide with official rights, artist safety, and other fans' experiences. IP designers must therefore not view community merely as something to activate. Because a community is a society, it also raises questions of governance, mediation, buffering, and guidance.
4. Case: The Same IP Becomes a Different World in a Different Access Environment
Imagine a new music IP. Even with the same songs, members, and concept, fans enter its world differently depending on the first touchpoint. Someone first encountering it through a YouTube music video enters through the video's colors, narrative, expressions, subtitles, and interpretations in the comments. Someone first encountering it through a short TikTok challenge enters through the chorus, movement, expression, and easily imitated rhythm. Someone meeting it in a streaming playlist enters through the song's atmosphere and repeated listening. Someone meeting it first on a fan platform enters through the members' tone, notices, livestreams, and the flow of fan comments.
These four entrances lead toward the same world but do not provide the same experience. The YouTube entrance creates interpretation; the TikTok entrance creates imitation and variation; the streaming entrance creates repetition in everyday life; and the fan-platform entrance creates relationship and waiting. For an IP to become a fandom community, these entrances cannot operate in isolation. Each must generate different fan behaviors, while those behaviors reconnect into a single sense of the world.
Suppose a symbol in a music video is compressed into a movement in a TikTok challenge, that movement connects to a member's words on a fan platform, and a streaming playlist extends it into repeated listening to the same emotion. The fan then experiences the world in several ways. Worldview here is not a sentence in a setting book but the rule connecting actions across platforms. Fans do not understand only that "this world tells this kind of story." They learn, "In this world, we watch like this, imitate like this, wait like this, and speak again like this."
The same principle applies beyond music. In game IP, the physics of playing the main title becomes clear through controls and rules, while strategy videos, controversies over patches, memes, and convincing fan interpretations lay a social world over it. In webtoons and web novels, serialization cycles and paid advance viewing create information gaps; those gaps harden into community rules about spoilers. The media differ, but the structure is one. Platform physics and community society overlap the internal physics of content, giving the world greater depth.
The central lesson of these examples is clear. Today's IP is experienced not as one finished piece of content, but as a combination of access environments. Designing worldview therefore no longer means organizing internal setting alone. It means designing which actions are reinforced on which platforms, how an action on one platform leads to action on another, and which repetitions become part of fans' everyday rhythm.
5. The MEJE Approach: Documenting Physics and Society
In MEJE-style IP design, physics and society cannot remain abstractions; they must be documented. The physics of a world can be organized into at least three layers. The first is the internal physics of the content: the technologies, abilities, time, space, conditions of life, and causes of events possible within the story. The second is platform physics: the ways content is discovered, repeated, shared, and saved. The third is economic physics: what is free and paid, what is limited and always available, and which purchases create which permissions.
The society of a world can likewise be organized into three layers. The first is society within the story, including characters' classes, organizations, power, norms, taboos, and relationship networks. The second is fandom society, including roles among fans, language, onboarding sequences, methods of mediating conflict, and patterns of information distribution. The third is operational society: how producers, platforms, brands, creators, fans, and licensees are connected through different rights and responsibilities.
This distinction is not intended to make creation rigid. It does the opposite. Separating physics and society allows creators to see where they may vary freely and where they must preserve consistency. When physics shifts, a world becomes difficult to believe. When society shifts, relationships become unintelligible. When physics and society remain stable, by contrast, new characters, episodes, and platform experiments can enter without collapsing the world.
Several questions are useful in working documents. Which actions will fans necessarily repeat in this IP? On which platform do those actions occur most naturally? How do the experiences of free and paying fans differ? Which language must new fans learn first? At what moment does a fan feel like an insider? Which interpretive spaces should the official organization leave open? Which conflicts are difficult for the community to resolve by itself? All these questions reveal a world's physics and society.
From MEJE's perspective, this work can be divided between LOREBOOK and Vault. LOREBOOK organizes the world's internal rules and systems of meaning, while Vault accumulates production, operations, platforms, commerce, fan reactions, cases, and risks. Separating them prevents worldview from shrinking into a creator's notebook of tastes. A worldview document must become a decision-making document, not a beautiful setting book. It must enable teams to decide which forms of content to publish on which platforms, which sensations of the world a subscription product should reinforce, which fan activities the official organization should recognize, and where it should maintain distance.
6. Guarding Against Platform Determinism
This chapter uses platforms as examples not to dissect their internal algorithms. YouTube recommendations, TikTok's short-video feed, Spotify playlists, and membership structures on fan-community platforms are discussed only within publicly verifiable limits. Platforms continually change their features and policies, and experiences differ by region and user. Claiming that "a particular algorithm will invariably promote a particular kind of content" would therefore be an unverifiable assertion. "Platform physics" here does not mean immutable laws inside a technology. It is simply a name for the conditions of action fans experience.
The greater pitfall is platform determinism. Platforms certainly guide fan behavior with considerable force, but fans are not slaves to their rules. Long songs and slow developments that defy a platform's reward rules sometimes attract more attention, while old songs can reverse course on short-form video and overturn the charts. Fans bypass platforms, reinterpret content, and move to other communities. Reading a world's physics and society means acknowledging a platform's gravity while also examining how exceptions arise within it and how fans' collective creativity operates.
7. The Transition into a Fandom Community
When fans begin to explain a world's physics and society themselves, the IP's world crosses over into a fandom community. When a newcomer asks a question, established fans explain, "Start by watching this here," "This expression has this context," "This merchandise connects to memories from this period," or "This membership provides this kind of experience." Such explanations are not an official manual. They are the community's record of living in the world. At that point, worldview moves from the producer's property into the everyday knowledge of fandom.
For this movement to occur, the physics and society of the world must be neither too complex nor too empty. If they are too complex, newcomers cannot enter. If they are too empty, established fans have no reason to stay. A good IP worldview is simple at the entrance, deepens within, and gives those who remain long enough an order they can explain. Fandom communities grow upon precisely this explainability.
Here, the subscription economy is more than a revenue model. Subscription is a promise of repeated access. Fans do not buy something new each time; they reenter the world at a regular rhythm. Monthly memberships, recurring content, livestream notifications, exclusive posts, seasonal merchandise, and advance-access permissions all create the world's time. Fans may pay for individual content, but at a deeper level, they pay for a rhythm that lets them maintain a relationship with the world.
This issue grows even more important in AI-assisted creative environments. The faster images, music, video, and text can be produced, the more quickly an IP without physics and society scatters. It may accumulate generated outputs, but if no one can explain why they belong to the same world, fandom does not accumulate with them. AI is not a tool that creates worldview in our place. It is closer to a tool that implements already organized physics and society across more scenes and forms.
8. Conclusion
A world does not come into focus through the quantity of its settings. It comes into focus through how it works. Readers trust a world when they can tell what is possible and impossible, which actions create rewards, and which relationships create belonging. In today's IP industry, those mechanisms do not exist only inside content. Platforms, communities, subscriptions, commerce, and fans' repeated actions together create the physics and society of a world.
Designing an IP worldview therefore means organizing both the internal rules of a story and the external environment through which fans actually connect. YouTube, TikTok, Spotify, and fan platforms are not merely distribution channels, but entrances into worlds with different sensory qualities. Fandom communities move among these entrances and turn the world into everyday knowledge. For an IP world to become a fandom community means that people do not merely view the world and leave. They learn its physics and society and adopt them as rhythms of their own actions.
