Chapter 14. Librarying: Turning Scattered Material into a Knowledge System

Summary

Librarying is not the act of collecting materials. It is the work of extracting recurring keywords, relationships, desires, taboos, behaviors, scenes, and industry changes from scattered materials and turning them into a knowledge system. This is why Librarying matters. The process is necessary to keep fresh industry sensibilities arriving from K-pop, fandom, platforms, subscription economies, creator economies, AI, and communities from being diluted within existing worldview knowledge. Librarying does not force new materials to fit existing terminology. It examines which parts of the existing knowledge system those materials revise and expand. This chapter explains Librarying as the first process in an IP knowledge system.

1. Gathering Materials and Librarying Are Different

Gathering a large amount of material matters, but abundance does not mean that a knowledge system exists. Links, articles, newsletters, lecture notes, interviews, fan responses, platform cases, and internal meeting notes may accumulate, yet remain a pile unless they connect to one another. Librarying turns that pile into a readable structure.

If gathering materials asks, “What do we have?”, Librarying asks, “What are these materials saying repeatedly?” Gathering increases quantity; Librarying creates axes of meaning. Good Librarying does not merely organize material. It reveals the questions within it. It identifies industry changes appearing across several sources, locates where fandoms are moving, and discovers language that has not yet been named.

Without this distinction, new material readily becomes decoration for existing knowledge. If the work ends by attaching new cases to familiar concepts, the knowledge system merely repeats itself. Freshness disappears when concerns from the field are used only as examples illustrating old terms. Librarying must work in the opposite direction: new materials must be able to unsettle the existing knowledge system and create new entries and relationships.

The first attitude of Librarying is therefore humility. We must not try to explain everything with concepts we already possess. When material raises an unfamiliar question, that question should be preserved. Before quickly translating it into established terminology, we should read the new industry sensibility it carries. Librarying is not the work of taming materials; it is the work of allowing them to question us.

2. A Keyword Is a Unit of Observation, Not Just a Word

In Librarying, a keyword is not merely a word but a unit of observation. Terms such as “fandom,” “subscription economy,” “AI creation,” “community,” “IP,” and “worldview” are too broad. Librarying breaks these large terms into units that can be observed in practice. Through which behaviors does fandom appear? What rhythms does a subscription economy create? Which production bottlenecks does AI creation alter? Which roles does a community differentiate?

For example, “fandom economy” remains abstract if left intact. Divide it into photocard trading, concert tickets, membership subscriptions, merchandise resale, fan-project fundraising, digital items, paid messages, and fan-platform benefits, and it becomes observable knowledge. Each produces different fan behavior. Even when money flows in all of them, the meanings of collecting, belonging, access, authentication, support, investment, and play differ.

The same applies to “AI creation.” The broad term alone does not tell us what changes. Character image generation, worldview summarization, multilingual translation, short-form drafts, interactive characters, fan onboarding guides, material search, and merchandise-concept simulations are different functions. Librarying must divide a large buzzword into small units of work. Only then can we judge whether AI replaces, assists, or expands a worldview.

Keywords must also have relationships. “Subscription economy” connects to “fandom time”; “fandom time” connects to “ritual”; “ritual” connects to “community memory.” “AI creation” connects to “canon management”; “canon management” connects to “LOREBOOK”; and “LOREBOOK” connects to “reviewing generated material.” A keyword comes alive not as an isolated entry but within the world's network of relationships.

3. Librarying Is a Safeguard That Preserves Fresh Material

The greatest danger when handling a knowledge system is covering fresh material with existing knowledge. Processes such as Librarying, Vault, LOREBOOK, Character Build, and Storytelling 100 are powerful structures. Powerful structures, however, can absorb new material too quickly. The result may be a stable knowledge system that is no longer new.

A central sensibility arriving from the contemporary media industry is that changes in K-pop and other content are not merely changes in works. Fandom, platforms, communities, subscriptions, creation, and consumption are becoming bound into a single structure. This should not be reduced to the familiar sentence “worldviews are important.” What is new is not the word “worldview” itself, but how worldviews function in an environment transformed by online media, community formation, subscription economies, and AI creation.

Librarying must preserve this difference. It should not simply copy the issue raised by a source, but it must preserve the tension within that issue. For example, the sensibility of “virtualizing real-person IP” does not merely mean creating virtual characters. It means that the boundaries among real people, video, short-form content, fan platforms, character merchandise, AI-generated material, and community interpretation are becoming blurred. If this tension is handled only through the familiar phrase “worldview expansion,” its core disappears.

Librarying should therefore turn the concerns of a source into entries. It records which question came from which material and which existing entry in MEJE knowledge that question connects to. It then asks whether an existing entry explains it adequately, whether a new entry is needed, or whether the definition of an existing concept must be revised. Only through these questions does fresh material become an update to the knowledge system rather than decoration.

4. Observation Precedes Judgment in the First Extraction

It is important to delay judgment during the first extraction in Librarying. If we immediately divide material into good and bad cases, successful and failed strategies, we lose its texture. Observation must come first. We note which words recur, which behaviors appear for the first time, and which industry structures are changing. We also record which fan desires emerge and which conflicts repeat.

First-extraction items should be as small and specific as possible. Write “fans explain an onboarding order to new fans,” not “community is important.” Write “recurring payments create the fandom's timetable,” not “the subscription economy is rising.” Write “AI summaries can lower the onboarding barrier to a long-running worldview,” not “use AI.” Specific observations later become strong concepts.

Delaying judgment does not mean abandoning criticism. It is preparation for more accurate criticism. When observation is weak, criticism becomes predictable. Anyone can say that platforms matter, fandom has changed, or AI is necessary. Librarying must capture the behaviors, structures, and rhythms through which those statements actually appear.

Source labels matter at this stage. We should record where each observation originated and distinguish newsletters, lecture notes, industry cases, fan responses, official materials, and internal ideas. There are two reasons to document sources. One is to preserve the genealogy of which material opened which question. The other is to establish an independent knowledge system. Clear sourcing makes it possible to reconstruct a source's concern as one's own entry without copying its sentences or arrangement of examples. Librarying absorbs material without being pulled along by its expression.

5. The Second Pass Creates Entries

If the first extraction produces a list of observations, the second pass creates entries. An entry is a door into the knowledge system. If it is too broad, it explains nothing; if it is too narrow, it cannot connect. A good entry must group recurring observations while also forming relationships with other entries.

For example, an entry called “multichannel fandom behavior” can group several observations: fans discover something on YouTube, imitate it on TikTok, feel a relationship on a fan platform, interpret it in a community, and possess it through merchandise. An entry called “the virtual contact surface of real-person IP” can explain where real people, character-like images, AI-generated material, and avatar spaces meet. “Subscription-based worldview time” can explain how membership and recurring content create a fandom's rhythm.

The important issue when creating an entry is its distance from existing terminology. If an existing term explains the phenomenon adequately, no new entry is needed. If that term obscures the new phenomenon, a new entry becomes necessary. Librarying is not the work of multiplying terms; it gives names where names are needed. Once named, a phenomenon becomes discussable.

An entry should include a definition, observational evidence, connected entries, opposing concepts, and risk factors. Definition alone produces a dictionary; relationships alone produce a graph. A knowledge system requires definition, relationships, and context of use together. An entry placed in the Vault must be reusable later in the LOREBOOK, content, and fandom activities.

6. The Third Pass Creates Relationships

Relationships are the core of Librarying. Even a large number of entries does not make a knowledge system if they lack relationships. If “fandom economy,” “subscription economy,” “creator economy,” “worldview,” “community,” and “AI” remain separate, they form only a list of buzzwords. The structure advanced by this book is that they combine into a single fandom-community economy. Drawing relationships creates an argument.

Relationships take several forms: causal, conditional, transformative, tense, complementary, and risky. A subscription economy, for example, creates a fandom timetable. That timetable strengthens rituals; rituals create community memory; and community memory raises the meaning of merchandise and events. This flow combines conditional and transformative relationships.

The relationship between AI creation and the LOREBOOK is complementary and risky. A LOREBOOK supplies standards for AI-generated material, but if generation expands without a LOREBOOK, the worldview grows blurred. The relationship between real-person IP and character formation is also one of tension. Character formation permits expansion, but it can obscure the dignity and rights of real people. Recording relationships this way clarifies a worldview's claims.

Organizing relationships must descend all the way to fandom-community behavior. Draw a single line showing which fan behavior a concept creates, which commerce structure that behavior connects to, and which ethical risks the structure produces. A knowledge system that does not descend into behavior remains an abstract explanation. Librarying connects concepts to what fans actually do.

A scene from the music industry can help us understand that relationships are the substance of material. Imagine an archival collective backing up data from a major streaming service. The true asset is not the audio files themselves but the metadata showing which music exists and how the pieces connect. The links between track and track, track and user, and track and playlist are what must not be lost. The same insight underlies many knowledge systems. An encyclopedic wiki produces knowledge through links and categories between documents, not just through individual pages. A library makes books findable through classification and indexing as much as by gathering them. The music industry assigns each track a unique identifier so rights and settlement remain connected. Librarying takes the same perspective. Preserving relationships among materials matters more than collecting the materials themselves. A keyword becomes knowledge when it connects to other keywords, not when it stands alone. Just as scattered files may remain after a platform disappears while the connections among them vanish, a pile of materials whose relationships have not been organized cannot become a worldview.

There are traps in creating relationships too. Which connections seem important depends on the organizer's perspective. A mistaken connection may harden into fact, or only one interpretation may be reinforced. If everything is structured too densely, the material becomes rigid and leaves no room for new interpretation. Relationships bring materials to life, but drawn incorrectly, they can also become a frame that confines them.

7. Case Study: Librarying a Newsletter

Suppose a newsletter raises the convergence of K-pop's transformation into online media, fandom economies, subscription economies, and AI creation. A poor method is to take its sentence and place it directly into a text. Another poor method is to translate it only into the familiar claim that “worldviews are important.” A better method divides the concern into several units of observation.

First, divide the observations. K-pop is experienced not only as music but through video, short-form content, fan platforms, merchandise, live events, and communities. Fans become interpreters, collectors, subscribers, and creators as well as consumers. The activities of real people combine with character-like images. Subscription economies create repeated fandom access, while AI changes the speed and volume of worldview outputs. These observations preserve the source's concern without copying it.

Next, create entries. Possible candidates include “multichannel IP fandom,” “subscription-based worldview time,” “character formation in real-person IP,” “fandom creator economy,” “AI-based worldview output,” and “community interpretation labor.” These entries connect to existing MEJE terms. They meet Librarying, Vault, LOREBOOK, Character Build, and fandom activities and enter the logic of a new chapter.

Finally, create relationships. Multichannel IP fandom connects to the adjacent worldviews defined in Chapter 6. Subscription-based worldview time connects to community rituals. Character formation in real-person IP connects to the protection of real people. The fandom creator economy connects to licensing, and AI-based worldview output connects to LOREBOOK review. Organized this way, a newsletter becomes not copied source text but a new knowledge system.

8. Do Not Lose the Material's Central Concern

The greatest error in Librarying is losing the concern within the material. If new materials serve only as examples of existing concepts, the knowledge system becomes stable but stale. To preserve fresh sensibilities from the field, we must avoid copying a source's sentences while retaining the pressure of its questions.

Copying the source's expression is also an error. If its title, sentences, issue framing, and arrangement of cases are transferred unchanged, an independent knowledge system is difficult to build. Librarying solves the problem by extracting units of observation from the source, redefining them as one's own entries, and creating new relationships within the existing knowledge system. A concern becomes one's own knowledge only when it is rewoven within one's own network.

Creating too many keywords is another trap. If every unfamiliar phrase becomes an entry, the Vault grows bloated and difficult to use. An entry should be created when it can group recurring observations. A one-time impression may remain as a note, but to become a node in the knowledge system it must form relationships with other entries.

Finally, treating an industry case as a fixed contemporary fact is dangerous. Platform features, fandom behavior, subscription models, and AI tools continually change. Librarying must convert a time-specific case into a structural observation. Instead of writing, “This platform always works this way,” write, “Under these platform conditions, this form of fan behavior is strengthened.” The latter remains useful longer.

9. The Transition into a Fandom Community

For an IP world to become a fandom community, material must become knowledge. Operators need to know what fans respond to, which language they use, within which economic structures they move, and which interpretations they repeat. Librarying makes this information a starting point for worldview design. It does not merely gather material; it reads how fandoms actually use a world.

When Librarying is done well, a fandom community can be designed more precisely. Onboarding paths, subscription rhythms, the meaning of merchandise, standards for AI generation, the scope of licensing, and community guidelines are all created from evidence. Instead of imagining a fandom by intuition, operators read its behavior, language, and memory as a knowledge system. At that point, the worldview moves from a creator's declaration into actual fandom use.

Librarying also protects the freshness of a knowledge system. Instead of repeating existing knowledge, it continues to receive questions raised by new industry material. “How does an IP world become a fandom community?” has no fixed answer. As fandoms, platforms, AI, and economic structures change, Librarying must continue to be updated.

10. Conclusion

Librarying is the first process that turns scattered material into a knowledge system. If gathering materials is a question of quantity, Librarying is a question of recurring meaning and relationships. A keyword is a unit of observation rather than merely a word. An entry is a name that makes a phenomenon discussable, and relationships create a worldview's arguments.

Librarying is an especially important safeguard. It must preserve concerns arriving from the field without copying them directly or diluting them with existing knowledge. Librarying examines how new material revises and expands an existing knowledge system. Only through this process does an IP world become a living knowledge system capable of explaining a fandom community.
