Chapter 8. World Types IV: SF and the Future
The next section of the parts warehouse is the shelf of the future. SF is the widest and most misunderstood territory in the typology. Debate over its border never settles, ranging from the naive classification that any story with a spaceship counts as SF to the strict classification that scientific accuracy is SF's very qualification. The guiding question of this chapter is: what constitutes a world of the future? The chapter first fixes the principle of constitution, then opens the subtypes one by one from that principle.
1. SF: The Grammar of Speculation
SF is short for science fiction, but its essence lies closer to the alias speculative fiction than to the literal translation, science fiction. Speculation is a thought experiment that pushes the question what if all the way to its end. What if humans didn't die? What if machines could think? What if resources were infinite? SF is the genre that injects a single premise like this into a world and logically tracks how its ripples reshape society and the people in it. You will have noticed that this shares its design grammar and structure with alternate history. Fix a single point of divergence and roll everything after it forward as cause and effect — that is the technique of alternate history, applied to a premise instead of the past. It is also the reason designers of the two genres can borrow each other's document formats. The difference is the absence of a verifier. History is reviewed by the record, but the consequences of a premise are reviewed only by logic. So the quality of an SF worldview is decided not by the novelty of its premise but by the diligence of its tracking. Teleportation as a premise is nothing in itself. Everything depends on whether the world has worked all the way through what happens to borders, prisons, and real estate once teleportation exists. The great works of SF are remembered not for their list of premises but for the depth of their calculation. The design implication is clear. The center of an SF worldview document is not a list of settings but a ledger of ripple effects. A table that records, for every premise injected, its chain reaction through each sector of society is this type's core deliverable. The chain that once ran from a single coin now runs from a premise instead, but the process of digging in is the same.
2. The Boundary Between SF and Fantasy: The Authority of the Premise
The grammar of speculation exists in fantasy too. What if magic were real? is likewise a thought experiment. So what, then, divides SF from fantasy? The outward shape of the premise cannot serve as the standard. The same teleportation, realized through a magic circle, is called fantasy; realized through a quantum transporter, it is called SF. The phenomenon is identical, yet the classification splits. What actually splits it is the source of authority the premise leans on. I call this the authority of the premise. SF's premises lean on the authority of science. It need not be real science. The premise simply has to speak in science's form — the language of law, measurement, and reproducibility — and it borrows against science's credit. No one asks whether the equations of warp navigation are real. The mere posture of having equations is enough to pass review. Fantasy's premises draw on a different bank: the authority of myth, tradition, and the transcendent. Magic is legitimate not because it has been measured but because it belongs to an old order. It is no accident that spells resemble Latin and archaic language — age itself is this bank's collateral. Think of it as the structure by which exorcism borrows religious authority, expanded to the scale of an entire genre. The practical value of this view lies not in classification but in design, because unifying which authority a world's premises lean on is the actual substance of genre sense. If the sources of authority mix without permission inside one world, readers feel an unplaceable wrongness — as when a wizard suddenly starts measuring the output value of a spell, and the grain of the world shudders. Mixing them on purpose requires the procedure of genre fusion: a priority ruling.
3. Scientific Plausibility: SF's Condition of Permission
Saying that the source of authority is science pins down exactly what SF's condition of permission is. What the reader demands of SF is not scientific factuality but scientific plausibility. Faster-than-light travel is denied by present-day physics, yet it is SF's standard setting. What the reader is reviewing is not is this possible? but does this run the way science runs? The condition breaks down into three parts. First, lawfulness: a technology must follow a consistent rule, and what didn't work yesterday cannot start working today without explanation. Second, cost: every technology must carry a price, whether energy or side effect. A free miracle, the instant it is spoken in the language of science, is judged a fraud. A world that declares infinite power pays a further price from that moment on: it loses every energy-related conflict. Third, limits: there must be a list of things the technology cannot do. An omnipotent technology is deus ex machina on permanent standby. The list of what it cannot do is precisely the list of places where a story can happen. These three conditions also answer the question of what separates hard SF from soft SF. The real substance of that distinction is not a difference in scientific accuracy but a difference in how strictly the three conditions are observed. The design implication is the standardization of a technology specification. Every major technology in the world should be registered in the same format for the depth of its principle's explanation, its cost, and its limits. The principle can be a single line, but the cost and the limits cannot be left blank, because the principle is an entry for the world and the cost and the limits are entries for the story. This format performs, for SF, the same role the game world's system spec performs there.
4. The Future: Extension of the Present, or a Break From It?
With the principle of constitution in place, we turn the tense dial forward to the future. The first design decision for a world staged in the future is extension or break. An extension-type future starts from the present and is a future one can arrive at: today's technology and social problems carried forward a few decades. Near-future fiction belongs here. A break-type future has severed its connection to the present: centuries ahead, an interstellar civilization, or a world after a great cataclysm, and it holds a freedom close to that of an isekai world. The two forms have opposite cost structures. Extension is cheap to explain — the starting point is a present the reader already knows, so only the delta needs teaching. But it is expensive to verify. Every reader who knows the present reviews the plausibility of that extension, and it also carries a shelf-life problem, its predictions going stale within a few years. Near-future fiction's expiration date is the shortest in the entire typology. A break-type future, conversely, is free of verification but must teach the entire world from scratch. To lower the barrier to entry, break-type futures commonly reach for the device of a modern-day viewpoint: a cryosleeper or a migrant from our own time. The design implication is the extension type's method of chronicle-writing. The core document of an extension-type future is the interim chronicle running from the present to the story's point in time — a record of what changed, when, and by what trigger. If this chronicle is thin, the future is judged to be nothing more than the present with a few props glued on. A world where flying cars pass over a society running exactly like today's is the textbook case of that thinness. It is accurate to see this as the same document as alternate history's chronicle of alteration, rolled forward toward the future instead.
5. Outer Space: The Ultimate Stage
Widen the future's stage all the way, and it becomes outer space. The instant a worldview takes space as its stage, it starts fighting physical quantities: distance and time. It takes light itself years to cross from star to star, and this single fact obstructs nearly every basic move a story wants to make. News cannot be carried. Rescue cannot arrive. An empire cannot be governed. Space reveals that most of Earth's narrative grammar was built on an assumption of immediacy. So designing a space world's setting is, in practice, choosing how to handle this physical quantity. There are three options. First, the path of routing around physics: introduce faster-than-light travel and communication, and space effectively becomes an ocean, importing the grammar of the Age of Sail. Space opera stands on this path. Second, the path of observing physics: accept the speed-of-light limit, and time dilation, generation ships, and one-way voyages become conditions of the world, with distance itself turned into the raw material of tragedy. Third, the path of narrowing the stage: shrink the range to the solar system, a single station, or a single ship, and space folds back into the grammar of a small world. A sealed ship is both a household and a company set afloat in space; in practice, most ship-set fiction is more accurately read through the grammar of a small world. The design implication is a duty to disclose the first decision. The speed rules for travel and communication are the constitution of a space world, so they must be fixed with top priority and presented early. Let this rule waver, and the very size of space starts to waver with it. In a world where communication is instant but travel takes months, that asymmetry's social consequences must be worked out as well.
6. Giant Robots: Where Technology Becomes Myth
The shelf that the space age's Japan built entirely on its own is giant robot fiction. A giant humanoid weapon piloted by a person is a premise that cold military logic can barely justify. That this type has nonetheless survived half a century is because the robot is not a weapon but a vessel for something else. A giant robot is a mythic being wearing technology's outward form. What the boy climbs into is not a cockpit but his father's legacy; what launches is not a weapon but a rite of passage. It is the hero narrative of donning divine armor, translated into the authority of science — a singular case where the authority of the premise is doubled. It speaks the language of engineering while moving on the causality of myth. This duality is what fixes the focus of design. Where a giant-robot world demands coherence is not the robot's engineering but the robot's standing. Why can only a boy pilot it? What is the robot treated as, socially? Why does the enemy fight it at the same specification? The answers to these questions — the setting of who is qualified to pilot and why the robot exists at all — take priority over engineering verification. Debate over the joint-actuation method is business for after the piloting qualification has been settled. The design implication is committing the symbol's design to writing. What this robot symbolizes within the world, and the rules that support that symbol, belong on the document's first page. Once the symbol is fixed, the design, the combat rules, and the enemy's specifications can all be worked out backward from it. A robot with specs but no symbol is just a large piece of heavy equipment. The machines that survive in the genre's history are remembered for their meaning, not their performance.
7. Superpower-Battle Fiction: Designing the Power System
Divide mythic power among individuals, and you get superpower-battle fiction. Characters each carrying a unique power contend against one another; Japanese shōnen manga refined the format, and it is also one of Korean web novels' and webtoons' leading exports. This type's worldview is, in effect, its power system: the system of how powers arise, how they are classified, and what decides superiority between them is the world itself. Well-designed systems share one trait — the source of strength lies in operation, not output. A pure output hierarchy is easy to build but kills the story, because the rankings become a scoreboard that reads the outcome before the fight begins. The evidence is that inflating combat-power numbers has broken this genre more than once. The proven solution is constraint and matchup. Attach heavier conditions to stronger powers, and plant rock-paper-scissors relationships between powers, and the contest shifts from a comparison of output to a battle of wits over exploiting conditions. This type's finest product — the unexpected victory of a weaker power — comes from that structure and nowhere else. That constraint is the source of the fun is the paradox at this type's core. The design implication is a power-registration format: register effect, activation condition, constraint, and matchup as required fields for every power, and approve a new power only after checking its match results against every existing power. It is the same process as game balancing, and in practice, managing this type's worldview looks less like setting management and more like running a live game. Every new power is a patch, and a patch without a balance check goes straight to broken.
8. Utopia: The Trap of the Completed World
There is a lineage that takes society, not power, as its object of speculation. Its first entry is utopia. Coined by Thomas More, the word is a pun layering two Greek roots — the good place and no place — over each other, and it names the type that depicts an ideal society. Seen through the eyes of worldview work, utopia is a paradoxical problem. A completed society has no lack; with no lack there is no conflict; with no conflict there is no story. So a pure utopian narrative almost never exists, and in practice, most works become a review of utopia instead. Is this completion real? Who pays completion's cost? What power sustains it? Trace the answers and what usually turns up is management, surveillance, and exclusion, and the utopia inverts into a dystopia from the inside out. A paradise sustained only because someone is cast out beyond the gate is this lineage's old heart. The structure by which the very declaration of completion is itself the concealment of a flaw is the type's standard grammar. The design implication is keeping a double ledger. A utopian world is built in two layers: official setting and actual setting. Produce, as separate documents, the face of the world as announced to its residents and the structure of the world as it actually runs, and manage the list of gaps between the two. Those gaps are the story's points of entry, and the protagonist is usually the figure who steps on one gap and falls through to the world's underside. Choosing where to place the gap is itself the design of the plot.
9. Dystopia: The Grammar of a Broken World
A world where the gap does not even need hiding anymore is dystopia. The antonym of utopia, it names a world where a bad condition has been completed across an entire society. A totalitarian surveillance society, a society where class is biologically fixed, a society where thought is policed at the level of language — these are the classic specimens. The core principle of dystopia design is the absolutization of a single value. Take one value that is good in itself — safety, efficiency, equality, happiness — and grant it the authority to override every other value, and a dystopia is established. This principle is what separates the type from a cheap villain's world. A good dystopia's ruling system runs not on malice but on logic, and that logic is partly right, which is what makes it hard to refute. What unsettles the reader is not the world's cruelty but the world's plausibility — the sense that our own society is one half-step slip away from arriving there, and that sense is this type's power. The design implication is writing the regime's defense in advance. Write out, first, honestly, and hard to refute, the logic by which this world's ruling system justifies itself. The world only stands if that document is persuasive. Only then draft the regime's cost list — what that logic paid as its price. Add the technical means of control, the forms resistance takes, and the machinery that sustains the regime, and the dystopia's spec is complete. Not the intensity of the oppression but the completeness of the justification is this type's measure of quality.
10. Post-Apocalypse: The World After the End
The last entry in the lineage of social speculation deals with what comes after a society has fallen. Post-apocalypse is the type that stages itself after civilization's collapse. Nuclear war, plague, climate catastrophe — whatever it was, some event ended the world, and the story begins in its ashes. Design for this type is built in three layers. The first layer is the specification of the collapse: what fell, when, and how decides every condition of the world that remains. A plague world leaves its buildings standing; a nuclear world leaves its land dead. The second layer is the inventory of remnants. What survived? The surviving technology, the surviving records, the surviving fragments of institutions form this world's resource map, and the process by which relics of the old age acquire the standing of myth is what gives this type its distinctive flavor. The third layer is the seedling of a new order. Wherever people gather, even in ruins, rules take root, and this type's real subject is usually not destruction but this rebuilding: what order stands back up, and are the old world's mistakes repeated? The design implication is that the world before the collapse must be designed first. To depict a fallen world, the world before it fell must already exist on paper, because the wreckage is only the shadow of its original form. And for a long time now, one entry has stood first on this type's list of causes of collapse: a walking disaster, and next chapter's first guest — the zombie.
