Chapter 10. Relationship Networks and Cast: The Five People Beside a Character
By the last chapter, every part of one person’s driving force had been planted: seed, mirror, everyday slice, twist, drama, flaw, trauma, goal, and conflict were aligned inside a single person. But no person can live and move alone. Their movement gains meaning only when they are placed among other people.
Today is the stage of placing other people beside a character. We check how to distribute four people, what functional role each has in relation to the character, and whether all four are identifiable.
A Character Lives and Moves Only in Relationship
First, let us establish the stance.
It is extremely rare for one person to carry a work alone. A one-person short story or monologue may be an exception, but an ordinary work finds its place in relationships among several people, and those relationships make one person three-dimensional. What reveals most clearly what kind of person someone is is not their action alone, but the texture of the relationships they form with others.
When we build one character, we build the five people around that person at the same time. We do not simply list five people; we distribute them through a five-axis matrix. We spread them out so that two people do not overlap in the same cell. When the distribution works, the five people acquire different textures and become identifiable.
Today we cover that procedure of distribution.
Two Forms of Relationship Network
When drawing a relationship network, choose one of two forms. The branch changes according to the nature of the work.
Family-tree form. Centered on blood relations. Draw two to three generations in one place. It suits large family narratives, dynastic works, and series. Its advantage is that family history and power relations among people can be seen at a glance. Its disadvantage is that non-blood relationships—friends, colleagues, lovers, rivals—are hard to capture.
Inside Out mind-map form. Place one character in the center and arrange surrounding people by relationship keyword. They need not be family. Arrange them by keywords such as mentor, rival, best friend, nemesis, and lover. It suits general works. Its advantage is that varied relationships can be seen at a glance. Its disadvantage is that intergenerational relationships are hard to capture.
Depending on the work, choose one of the two forms or use both. The mind-map form suits M’s work. Family relationships are central, but the mother is absent, so the family tree is nearly empty; professional relationships with a colleague, prosecutor, and junior colleague are central, making a mind map more natural.

Checking Distance in Egri’s Three Dimensions
After placing the five people, check one thing: what distance each person occupies from M.
Measure it in three dimensions.
The physiological dimension captures gender, age, height, appearance, health, and heredity. The social dimension captures origin, education, religion, political inclination, hobbies, nationality, and family. The psychological dimension captures personality, complexes, compulsions, trauma, longing, disillusionment, and moral code. In each dimension, mark the distance from M as close, middle, or far. The distance between M (a 55-year-old woman) and the colleague medical examiner (a 55-year-old man) is middle in the physiological dimension; close in the social dimension because they have worked together in the same university-hospital autopsy department for thirty years; and far in the psychological dimension, with M avoiding private territory and the colleague actively entering it.
This table determines the texture of the relationship between M and the colleague medical examiner: close socially and far psychologically. They have worked together for thirty years, yet take opposite postures in private territory. This difference creates both the possibility of conflict and the possibility of synergy between them.
One principle: at least one dimension must have a large distance for conflict to be possible. If every dimension is close, the two people become the same person. They are only mirrors of the identical person. A distance in even one dimension makes the two people identifiable.
This check receives a first assessment with an AI work partner and is reviewed by the producer.
Relationship Integration Sheet
Husbands and wives, siblings, or colleagues may always act together. For such two people, keep an integration sheet in addition to the individual sheets.

The header format for an integration sheet:

Principle: do not duplicate individual information. The integration sheet contains only the texture produced when the two act together. Keep each person’s individual texture in the individual sheet and refer to it only from the integration sheet.
An integration sheet does not suit M’s work well. M and the colleague medical examiner have worked together for thirty years, but they are far apart privately. Two individual sheets are more natural than an integration sheet.
An integration sheet suits E’s work. E and C, who was like a sibling and has died, always acted together at the age of seven. E’s individual sheet, C’s individual sheet, and an “E–C age-seven integration sheet” are built together.
Five Classifications of People
Do not full-build every person beside a character. Divide them into five classifications, and build each classification to a different depth.
Category A, main/supporting roles—the work’s central people, such as protagonist, rival, and mentor—receive a full build (all twelve stages). Category B, bit parts—people appearing in one or two scenes, such as passersby or staff—use the short path. Category C, mention only—people who never appear in the text but are mentioned in dialogue, for example “Mother always used to say…”—receive a one-line note. Category D, mythic/historical figures—real beings external to the work, such as Apollo or Napoleon—receive an external reference link. Category E, allegory/symbol—personifications of abstract concepts, such as fate or death—are registered as separate keywords.
The five classifications make working time reasonable. Of the five, only A receives a full build; B is shortened, C is a note, D is a reference, and E is separate. If a work has thirty appearing people but only about five A characters, full build applies only to those five.
M’s cast:
A Main/supporting roles:

- AI autopsy assistant system (Wildcard, atypical case in chapter 13)
B Bit parts:
- Bereaved family of the corpse (one-scene appearance)

- Mother (mentioned throughout the work but never appears in the text)

Four A roles, two B roles, and one C role. Including M, the cast has eight people. Full build applies only to the four people besides M.
Character Function Roles: Three Narrative Models
When placing a character in the relationship network, decide what functional role that person plays in the work. Choose one of three narrative models suited to the genre and map the character through it.
An archetype is a basic human pattern that recurs across stories: teacher, guardian of the threshold, shadow, trickster, and so on. Psychologist Carl Jung used the term for unconscious images shared by humankind; in craft, we borrow it as a slot for quickly identifying a person’s functional role. One person can hold two archetypes.
A well-built cast gives each person a distinct function. Look at Shohoku’s five starting players in Slam Dunk: Hanamichi Sakuragi is the reckless protagonist who overturns the board; Kaede Rukawa is the rival who shines through colliding with him; Takenori Akagi is the pillar holding up the team; Hisashi Mitsui is the returned prodigal; Ryota Miyagi is the coordinator who keeps the flow going. When the five stand on the same court, each fills a different absence and becomes one team.
Greimas’s six actants are the simplest and most universal tool: Subject (the pursuer), Object (what is pursued), Sender (what initiates the pursuit), Receiver (what receives the outcome), Helper, and Opponent. In M’s work, M = Subject + Receiver; the mother’s last moments = Object (absence itself); the wedding ring on the corpse’s hand = Sender; the colleague medical examiner and junior colleague = Helper; the prosecutor rival and M’s own thirty-year posture = Opponent. One character can occupy two roles (M as her own opponent), and if a role is empty after mapping, the work’s driving force is weak.
Propp’s seven spheres suit heroic narratives, folktales, and game NPCs: Hero (= Greimas’s Subject), Villain (= Opponent), Helper, Donor (provider of a magical tool, part of Helper), Sought-for Person (part of Object), Dispatcher (= Sender), and False Hero (one who pretends to be a hero). M’s work is not a heroic narrative, so the six actants suit it better; Propp’s seven spheres suit E’s work, a war-world narrative.
Vogler’s seven archetypes are psychological archetypes drawn from Campbell’s hero’s journey and are an industry standard for Hollywood, web fiction, and game scenarios: Hero, Mentor, Threshold Guardian, Herald, Shapeshifter (an ambivalent person), Shadow (a mirror of the hero’s dark side), and Trickster (confusion, laughter, transition). Even for the same antagonist, Greimas’s Opponent and Vogler’s Shadow have different textures. Shadow is not a simple external enemy but a mirror showing the hero’s dark side. A character can occupy two roles—for example, Yoda in Star Wars is Mentor + Trickster. It is powerful for heroic narratives, fantasy, and web fiction; Greimas/Propp plus the seven supporting archetypes is enough for ordinary drama.
If we map E’s work through Vogler, E = Hero; the man with the star on his shoulder = Mentor (a mentor in a past life who appears again after regression); the organization’s boss = Shadow (the extreme of E’s dark side); the seven-year-old hostage = Herald + Threshold Guardian. Shapeshifter and Trickster remain empty because of the work’s concept—an intentional bias. A work need not fill all seven roles.
For all three models, receive a first assessment of the mapping with an AI work partner, then have the producer review it.
Seven Supporting Archetypes: Characters Beyond the Standard Types
Beyond the typical protagonist and villain, seven supporting archetypes enrich a work.
The five people in Lupin the Third are often cited as a textbook of ensemble design: Lupin, the easygoing thief; Jigen, the taciturn sharpshooter; Goemon, the rigid swordsman; the ungraspable Fujiko; and Zenigata, the persistent pursuer. The five possess independent personalities while filling one another’s gaps. It is a well-distributed ensemble whose balance collapses if even one is missing. The six friends in the sitcom Friends also occupy different slots—Monica, driven by compulsion; Phoebe, delightfully odd; Chandler, armed with jokes—forming a balance in which no one overlaps another.
Close-up · The Normandy squad in Mass Effect In the RPG Mass Effect, protagonist Shepard brings alien companions aboard the Normandy one by one: a sniper-skilled turian, a quarian engineer who handles machines, an asari scholar of ancient knowledge, a bellicose krogan warrior. Species, personality, and values are distributed so that none overlap, producing different reactions to the same event. The player also manages their relationships and loyalty directly. It is a case in which the game systematizes the work of this chapter: distributing and operating a cast across five axes.
Foil emphasizes the protagonist’s traits by contrast through an opposite disposition—impulsive when the protagonist is careful, indulgent when the protagonist is restrained. Confidant is a person to whom the protagonist confesses secrets—listening, advising, or remaining silent. Comic Relief eases tension and supplies laughter through comic actions and speech. Catalyst triggers an event but is not affected themself, appearing at the center of the event and then disappearing. Witness/Narrator observes events without acting directly—recording, testifying, contemplating. Innocent preserves the moral center—pure and consistent. Wildcard is unpredictable and often changes sides—improvised action, betrayal, rescue.
Choose two to four of the seven types that fit the character’s work and place them in the cast. M’s cast:
- Colleague medical examiner: Confidant + Foil. A companion of thirty years and the opposite in private territory.
- Prosecutor rival: Opponent. Detects M’s procedural violation.
- Junior colleague: Innocent. A newly appointed medical examiner who preserves the moral center.
- AI autopsy assistant system: Wildcard. Takes a different role each time it appears in the text.
- Mother (absence): Catalyst. The cause of every event, yet absent herself.
All five people in M’s cast have different archetypes: Confidant, Foil, Opponent, Innocent, Wildcard, and Catalyst. From their own positions, the five each illuminate one aspect of M.
The Four Functions of Opponent: Breaking Down the Antagonist’s Role
We have established the principle that a cast needs at least one Opponent. Let us unpack once more what roles that Opponent performs.
Background
This is the analysis of Opponent’s role organized by American screenwriter Robert McKee in Story. Opponent is not a simple enemy; McKee positions it as the midwife who draws out the protagonist’s Truth. At this stage, Opponent divides into four functions.
A true adversary is not a simple villain but a mirror threatening the protagonist’s deepest value. Light Yagami and detective L in Death Note are such a pair. Both are geniuses and both are convinced of their own justice; it is precisely that resemblance that makes each the other’s most dangerous enemy. L is an enemy standing outside Light and, at the same time, another self Light might have become. This kind of adversary pushes a story furthest.
Purpose of Introduction
Having only one Opponent in the cast does not mean that person must occupy every Opponent function. One person may hold two of the four while different people hold the other two. McKee’s breakdown makes that distribution visible at a glance.
Four Functions
The four functions of Opponent are: 1) block the goal (an external obstacle directly stopping the protagonist’s Want); 2) reinforce the Lie (an internal trap making the protagonist believe their Lie more firmly); 3) force Truth into view (exposing the protagonist’s Lie as false); and 4) become a mirror (a doppelgänger showing the protagonist’s dark side, a reversed self).
When one Opponent occupies all four functions, that person becomes the work’s core antagonist. Two people may divide them, and a different archetype—Mentor or Foil, for example—may take a function in altered form.
When an Opponent performs two or more functions, the antagonistic role works more three-dimensionally. A person who performs only one function may be designed as a simple obstacle; adjust the weight according to the work’s needs.
Apply this to M’s work.
- Prosecutor rival: functions 1 (blocks the goal) + 3 (forces Truth into view by detecting the procedural violation)
- M’s own thirty-year posture: function 2 (reinforces the Lie by binding M to the territory of her mother’s absence)
- The corpse, someone other than her mother: function 4 (mirror, a reversal of the territory M has believed absent for thirty years)
The four functions are distributed across three figures. The prosecutor rival takes two external-antagonist functions; M herself takes one internal-antagonist function; the corpse takes the mirror function. The antagonistic role in one work does not gather in one person but works three-dimensionally through distribution.
Three Principles of Cast Distribution: Contrast, Complement, Harmony
Apply three principles when distributing five people.
The principle of contrast is strong for pairs and triangles built from opposite dispositions. The principle of complement is strong for ensembles of four to six whose weaknesses and strengths complement one another. The principle of harmony is strong for groups in the same camp or of colleagues who share values but express them differently.
Use all three principles across the whole cast. If every two characters are bound by only one principle, the cast as a whole becomes flat. A pair needs two or more principles at work to gain depth.
The idea of spreading several people into different slots resembles choral writing and game-party construction. A choir needs soprano, alto, tenor, and bass to take their own ranges before harmony fills out; a role-playing-game party works only when tank, damage dealer, healer, and support are divided. Spread the personalities, values, and emotions of five people so that they do not overlap, and only then do they make harmony when brought onto one stage.
Applied to M’s cast:
- M ↔ colleague medical examiner: contrast (opposites in private territory) + harmony (the same professional values)
- M ↔ prosecutor rival: contrast (M evades procedure; the rival is compulsive about procedure)
- M ↔ junior colleague: complement (M’s thirty years of experience and the junior’s freshness)
- M ↔ AI autopsy assistant: complement (M’s intuition and AI’s precision)
All three principles are used: a result in which one cast does not become flat.
Patterns by N
Recommended patterns differ according to the number of people in a cast.
Single (one person): full build only, without the cast module. Pair (two people, a Foil pair): opposite MBTI with the same Hogwarts house, or the reverse. Triangle (three people): three different Hogwarts houses, producing conflict → reconciliation or a three-way balance. Ensemble (four to six people): distribution across the four Hogwarts houses plus one or two outsiders. Large cast (seven to twelve): four Hogwarts houses × two, plus one to four antiheroes or jokers. Crowd plus core (thirteen or more): full-build four to six main/supporting roles and use the shortened path for the rest.
M’s cast has five people (M + four), so it uses the four-to-six ensemble pattern. All four Hogwarts houses should be distributed.
M’s Hogwarts distribution:
- M: Hufflepuff
- Colleague medical examiner: Gryffindor (direct, decisive)
- Prosecutor rival: Slytherin (strategic, ambitious)
- Junior colleague: Ravenclaw (knowledge, creativity)
- AI autopsy assistant: (outside Hogwarts), atypical in chapter 13
All four Hogwarts houses are covered. If two or more people gather in one house, the cast becomes flat.
Five-Axis Matrix: Distribution Check
The core tool for cast distribution is the five-axis matrix. It checks how five people overlap and diverge across five axes.
Five axes:
1. MBTI quadrants (NT · NF · SF · ST)
2. Four Hogwarts houses
3. Change arc (Positive · Flat · Negative)
4. Core stakes (physical · professional · identity · relational · ontological)
5. Dominant five emotions (joy · sadness · anger · disgust · fear)
M’s five-axis cast matrix:
M is SF, Hufflepuff, Positive arc, identity stakes, and sadness among the five emotions. The colleague medical examiner is ST, Gryffindor, Flat arc, relational stakes, and disgust. The prosecutor rival is NT, Slytherin, Flat arc, professional stakes, and anger. The junior colleague is NF, Ravenclaw, Positive arc, ontological stakes, and joy. The AI autopsy assistant is an outside figure with physical stakes and fear.
Across the five axes, all five people occupy different cells. Some cells are empty, but no two people dominate the same cell. This is the result of a three-dimensionally distributed cast.
This matrix distribution is a good area for rapidly comparing draft candidates with an AI work partner. Give it the seed and five-scale results to create distribution candidates; the producer reviews and adopts the one suited to the work’s tone.
One principle: five-axis distribution is a recommendation, not a command. A work’s concept may concentrate on one axis—for example, a political drama in which all characters are Slytherin. If the bias is intended, it is OK. What matters is distributing consciously.
Seven Checks for Cast Consistency
After distribution, perform seven checks.
1. Each character passes the Walks-into-a-room Test (identifiable in five seconds)
2. The whole cast covers all four Hogwarts houses (when there are four or more people)
3. At least one Positive and one Negative arc coexist (when there are three or more people)
4. Each character has different core stakes (with five or more, attempt to cover all five layers)
5. Check three-dimensional distance between characters: every pair is far in at least one dimension
6. One-Line Test: can each character be distinguished from every other character in one line?
7. At least one Opponent in the cast (a person who shakes the Lie)
Perform a first assessment of these seven checks with an AI work partner; the producer decides. If two or more checks are ✕, distribute again.
Combination with Module 5
Cast distribution also combines with the identity/diversity module (module 5). Beyond the five axes, add a check for distributing seven dimensions of diversity through the cast.
Cast diversity check:
- Gender distribution: M (F), colleague (M), prosecutor (M), junior (F), AI (N): balanced OK
- Age distribution: 55 · 55 · 40 · 28 · N: varied
- Socioeconomic background: M (middle class), colleague (working class), prosecutor (upper class), junior (middle class), AI (N): varied
- Neurodiversity: all four human characters have no separate setting: single (requires additional review)
Keeping such checks in mind allows diversity to distribute naturally through the cast: do not load all diversity into one person, but let seven dimensions be appropriately distributed across five people.

One more example. E’s cast differs from M’s.
E’s cast (three people):
- C (dead, sibling): three dimensions all close → no conflict (relationship ended)
- “Man with the star on his shoulder” (mentor): great social and psychological distance
- Seven-year-old hostage child (core Phase conflict): great distance in every dimension
Hogwarts distribution:
- E: Slytherin
- “Man with the star on his shoulder”: Slytherin (same camp)
- Seven-year-old child: (Hogwarts classification weak because a child)
Five-axis matrix: two people share a Hogwarts house. Intended bias: a hierarchy of power within the same camp.
E’s cast differs from the five-axis recommendation: it is an intentional bias. One axis concentrates in keeping with the work’s concept, a tragedy inside a hierarchy of power.
Next Chapter
Today’s chapter can be summarized this way: when the five people beside a character are checked through a five-axis matrix, the five acquire different textures and become identifiable. Cast distribution is a division of work: produce first candidates with an AI work partner, then have the producer review them for the work’s tone.
By today, ten of the twelve stages are complete. One person and the four people beside them are all aligned. The next chapter enters stage 11, immersive operation: inhabiting the person and going deeply inside.
