Character Introduction

Darcy's cousin and Georgiana's co-guardian. Born the second son of an earl, he is a cheerful gentleman who has pursued a military career. Unlike Darcy, he is sociable and enjoys conversation, quickly becoming friendly with Elizabeth. He is not handsome, but wins favor through his manners and conversational ability. As a younger son excluded from inheriting the family estate, however, he faces the practical necessity of finding a wealthy wife. He is attracted to Elizabeth but acknowledges that his lack of fortune prevents him from courting her.

Narratively, Colonel Fitzwilliam is a decisive bearer of information. While staying at Rosings, he casually mentions that Darcy saved Bingley from an “imprudent marriage.” This ignites Elizabeth's anger and directly contributes to her rejection of Darcy's first proposal.

• EVT-026: visits Rosings with Darcy at Easter. He converses cheerfully with Elizabeth and proves much more sociable than Darcy, visiting Hunsford Parsonage several times to see her.
• EVT-027: during a walk, he casually tells Elizabeth that Darcy recently saved a friend from an imprudent marriage. Elizabeth immediately realizes that he means the separation of Bingley and Jane. This becomes one of her three reasons for rejecting Darcy.
